plus guests 29th30th & 31st July _ Main Venue _ MON 29th: CURRENT CAREER SPANNING SET TUE 30th: SONGS FROM THE FIRST THREE ALBUMS WED 31st: SONGS FROM THE SECOND THREE ALBUMS “a punkish musical sensibility…an invigorating polemic…” – Uncut “Unquestionably our generation’s finest protest singer…Bragg’s needed more than ever…vital and indispensable.” – Classic Pop “…back to his most politically direct…it’s great to hear the fire in his belly once more.” – MOJO “Political turmoil has regalvanised Billy Bragg…” – The Guardian/Observer Aiken Promotions proudly presents Billy Bragg Billy Bragg live at Whelans, 29th, 30th and 31st July. One day ticket €35.00 inclusive of booking fee, three day tickets are available from Ticketmaster €92.00 inclusive of booking fees – on sale Friday 9th February at 10AM. Billy Bragg has confirmed a 2019 U.K and Ireland tour entitled “One Step Forward. Two Steps Back.” In each town Bragg will perform three unique shows on consecutive nights. The 29th July performance will feature Bragg’s current set, which ranges across his 35 year career. His second performance on 30th July, will see Bragg perform songs from his first three albums: his punk rock debut Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs Spy (1983), its similarly raw follow-up Brewing Up with Billy Bragg (1984) and Talking with the Taxman about Poetry (1986). His third performance, 31st July will see Bragg perform songs from his second three albums: the positively jangled Workers Playtime (1988), the pop classic Don’t Try This at Home (1991) and the back-to-basics William Bloke (1996). Says Billy: “After more than three decades of travelling around the world in a van, or spending all day flying vast distances to play a gig, I’m looking forward to having some time to explore cities that I usually only get to see between the soundcheck and the show. And this three night stand format is a way of keeping things interesting, both for me and the audience. I tried it out in Auckland recently and had a lot of fun revisiting my back pages.” Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. Politicised by a Tory government operating without love or justice, this previously adrift young man from Barking, whose failure at national exams had reduced his career opportunities to two, eventually bought himself out of the British Army in 1981 (‘the best £175 I ever spent’), determined to make a living out of song. Governments rise and fall, fashions come and go, pop stars are built up and knocked down by a fickle media, and Billy Bragg adapts to survive: the one-time Luddite and failed handyman has embraced New Media and engages with fans directly via Facebook and Twitter, uploading songs when a headline strikes. His enemies remain essentially the same: craven politicians, inhumane corporations, plus assorted racists, fascists, bullies, reactionaries and people with floppy fringes. Don’t miss the orator, entertainer, rabble-rouser, negotiator, pamphleteer, the fabled ‘Bard of Barking’, Billy Bragg, across three extraordinary evenings. Billy Bragg live at Whelans, 29th, 30th and 31st July Billy Bragg has been making waves for over 35 years. Among the former Saturday boy’s albums are his punk-charged debut Life’s a Riot With Spy Vs Spy, the more love-infused Workers Playtime, pop classic Don’t Try This At Home, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee-timed treatise on national identity England, Half-English, and his stripped-down tenth, Tooth & Nail, his most successful since the early 90s. The intervening three decades have been marked by a number one hit single, having a street named after him, being the subject of a South Bank Show, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Left Field at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria, being mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir and meeting the Queen. At their best, Billy’s songs present ‘the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal’ (the Guardian). Bragg has recently added best-selling author/musicologist to his CV with the success of his acclaimed 2017 book ‘Roots, Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed The World’.

GORILLA TROUBADOUR

https://gorillatroubadour.com https://www.facebook.com/GorillaTroubadour https://twitter.com/gorillatroub Following the release of their debut single ‘The Apple Truck’ and an ensuing tour around Ireland, Gorilla Troubadour have made a name for themselves as gritty rockers, combining powerful riffs and ear catching hooks. Over the summer they played at festivals such as Townlands Carnival and Gael Linn. Other highlights include a headline in The Workman’s Club as part of Gigonometry and packing out Geoff’s Bar in their hometown of Waterford. The band recently headlined The Workmans Club on the 17th of January to a full venue. The launch gig for ‘Tom Cruise Does All His Own Stunts’ is scheduled in Whelans on for the 19th of February. Also planned are launch dates in venues all across the country as the band look to build on their success of 2018. Channelling early, mid, and late noughties indie-rock with a crushing hard edge, Dublin four-piece Gorilla Troubadour barge their way through a rambunctious just shy of three minutes haymaker in the form of ‘Tom Cruise Does All His Own Stunts’. Bass and percussion act as a dual machine-gun of rapid-fire rock outbursts that explode in your face and leave you dizzied and delighted. (REMY, Irish Playlist) The new track kicks off with a rasping bass-line and doesn’t let go. There’s a little bit of Arctic Monkeys in the sound – not a bad thing at all – and it marks them out as a young band to keep an eye on in the coming years. (Joe.ie) — — — — —

TØY GIRL

https://www.facebook.com/TOYGIRLBAND Hannah, Fiachra and Ciaran began writing music together in March of 2018. Their shared interest in artists such as Ben Howard, Alice Pheobe Lou, King Krule and Peach Pitt helpe cultivate their early sound. As the group became more serious they enlisted the help of bass player Aran Hopkinson in September 2018. They played their first headline show to a sold out crowd at Whelan’s on the 25th of October, 2018. On foot of this performance they were immediately booked for shows at the button factory, Workman’s club and the Crowbar as well as recruiting the final member of the band, drummer, Cian O’Leary Hegarty. The group plan to gig and tour extensively for the summer with recording and releases planned for early 2019.
