Since 2006 they’ve been criss-crossing the States, headlining their own coast to coast shows as well as touring with artists such as Ani Di Franco, They Might Be Giants and more recently Ingrid Michaelson (who features their song You Got Me on her 2014 album Lights Out). Early in their career they won the 6th Annual Independent Music Award for best folk/songwriter song and since then they’ve had numerous songs featured in TV and film such as Brothers and Sisters, One Tree Hill, Eli Stone, Pretty LIttle Liars, The Education of Charlie Banks and Pretty Ugly People. With their most recent album This Time Round, they have had a musical rebirth, working with producer Chris Kuffner (Ingrid Michaelson, Secret Someones). While retaining the vocal harmonies and strong lyrical sensibilities that made The Guggenheim Grotto so successful, STORYMAN have developed their sonic landscape into something bigger, edgier and more beautiful. RHODES

plus guest I’M YOUR VINYL ^ Upstairs ^ Tickets will go on sale Friday, 26th June at 9am €15 inclusive of booking fee – This show is over 18’s I.D will be required Having honed the songwriting talent that has been clear for all to hear on his captivating early EP’s, ‘Close Your Eyes’ confirms the arrival of a major talent who has already been compared to artists as diverse as Jeff Buckley and Adele. The track is written by Rhodes and produced by Rhodes and his long-term collaborator James Kenosha (Dry The River, Pulled Apart By Horses). ‘Close Your Eyes’ is about vulnerability and trepidation. “It’s about my fear of performing” Rhodes says of the forthcoming single. “I wanted to make this a little more ambiguous so I changed it to the third person and made it more about me talking to somebody else-when really it’s me talking to myself.” Rhodes grew up in Hitchin. His father introduced him to the blues when he was small most notably Robert Johnson. Soon after he began to play guitar. His best friend’s sister later turned him onto Nirvana, Blur and Oasis at which point he took up piano. While at a local college, Rhodes regularly met other musicians at Club 85. After moving to London, he joined a band as their bassist, which quickly became a catalyst for songwriting. “It taught me a lot about putting songs together,” says Rhodes. “About rhythm and what gives a song its backbone.” Singing came late to him. “I’ve been playing guitar since I can remember but singing was something I was just too afraid to do.” He’s spent the last 18 months quickly making up for lost time because it’s his voice that really defines Rhodes, setting him apart from everyone else. This was never more apparent than on a recent Huw Stephens Radio 1 session when Rhodes performed an incredible cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’. It was so good that Taylor Swift re-tweeted the session. Rhodes has travelled a long way in a short time building on what has been a phenomenal beginning to a career that promises longevity. He’s supported Ben Howard, London Grammar, George Ezra and Sam Smith while selling out his own shows including his biggest show to date at London’s Village Underground in March. — — — — —

This lively Kildare band have been entertaining crowds for the past 5 years, with notable success nationally and internationally such as Electric Picnic 2013, (with ‘Trad side of the Moon’), Spirit of Folk, Bardentreffen Nuremburg 2013/2014, Paddy’s Day Parade main stage Munich 2013/2015, Bayern Greenfarm Festival 2014, Salzburg Whisky weekend, Stadtgründungsfest Munich,The Secret Village Festival 2013/2014, Vantastival 2014/2015, Irish Charity Ball Vienna 2015 and with a few more tasty gigs to be announced in 2015, Bunoscionn are definitely ones to watch. All hailing from County Kildare, Ireland, members Conleth Dunne, Mick Cross, Michelle Lynch, Ciaran Connaughton and Glenda McCormack met on the open session scene down amongst the boglands of Kildare and played together in many sessions over pints and cozy fires until formally establishing themselves as a group in 2010. The band has continued to grow from strength to strength and the fruit of their efforts has come in the form of their brand new self-titled EP. Recently launched in their spiritual home of Rathangan, Bunoscionn are on the move this summer, playing at many of the major Irish music festivals and across in Europe festivals. JOEL PLASKETT & MO KENNEY

Buy-now-button-master2

JOEL PLASKETT & MO KENNEY

plus support ^upstairs^ http://joelplaskett.com/ Joel Plaskett returns with one of the most diverse and fan-pleasing albums of his career. Proving that he can be all things to everybody, the rock veteran offers up a wide mix of styles on Joel Plaskett and the Park Avenue Sobriety Test. It touches on his solo acoustic side, his guitar rock work with the Emergency, his happy-go-lucky rhyming talents, carefree memories of growing up in Nova Scotia, and a little bit of anger at the forces making life tougher these days. There are many moments that draw on previous classic Plaskett, from beloved albums such as Three and Ashtray Rock, right back to his Thrush Hermit days. And there are new sides to his sounds as well – Joel like you’ve never heard him. There are plenty of hints as to where his head is at these days – 39 and holding, looking back at how he got there, and ahead past that milestone birthday. Even the title holds a clue in its anagram: Joel Plaskett and the P.A.S.T. You’ll find references to his salad days, like “On A Dime,” which starts with a blast of downhome Celtic fiddle from Cape Breton great J.P. Cormier. Then there’s Plaskett riffing on memories of playing road hockey in the liquor store parking lot, and later, traveling to Memphis with his band Thrush Hermit to make their first album. It’s not truly autobiographical though. These are more observations that have piled up over the last twenty-plus years of being a touring musician, traveling and meeting folks coast to coast to coast, mixing it in with his own life. If anything, it’s the teenager from Ashtray Rock, all grown up. The P.A.S.T. also refers to the cast of characters that helped make the album. With its wide-ranging sound it’s not a pure Joel Plaskett Emergency effort, although the band appears on more than half the tracks. It’s more like the Emergency-Plus, as lots of familiar faces from previous Plaskett discs are aboard. Longtime Emergency cohorts Dave Marsh – drums and Chris Pennell – bass anchor the rhythm section. Previous group members Tim Brennan and Peter Elkas play on several songs. From Plaskett’s former band Thrush Hermit is old pal Ian McGettigan. Then there are guests, friends and neighbours, such as Cormier, Halifax singer-songwriter Mo Kenney, singer Erin Costelo, and pedal steel player Dale Murray (Christina Martin, Cuff the Duke). In an era when most albums have the best tracks at the start and then a bunch of also-rans to fill up the quota, Plaskett stubbornly remains a throwback. The consummate music fan, even the album cover is a dead give-away, where he reclines on top of his massive collection of vinyl, no doubt filled with personal treasures and rare gems. Each cut stands alone as a winner, but together, they flow and create a full story. They are as catchy and melodic as his best work, but on Joel Plaskett and the Park Avenue Sobriety Test he’s gone one step further. The sequence is carefully planned, there are little linking bits, connections from one song to the next, one ending planned to segue into the next beginning. There’s a story arc about getting through life’s struggles and blue periods, and dramatic pacing, like a movie script. It starts with the rock, gets a little quieter, more serious and acoustic, then breaks the tension with some classy goofy lyrics (“Song for Jersey”) before wrapping up with the electric big band. In other words, this is a start-to-finish, must-listen album. You can pick out favourite lines (“When you’re one of a kind, you can’t get on the Ark”), new anthems (the title cut) and take a moment to reflect (“For Your Consideration”). You can marvel at new sides to Plaskett’s work, from the finger-pointing anger of “Captains of Industry,” where he takes on the one percent, ruining lives through trickle-down greed, to the cover of Stephen Foster’s “Hard Times,” a 160-year old protest song that shows times really haven’t changed much at all. It’s a rare album where an artist can lean so much on his P.A.S.T., yet still show a great deal of growth. But after twenty years of music-making mischief, Joel Plaskett never, ever lets you down, and seems to always find ways to get better.

Ubangi Stomp Club presents:

ALVIN YOUNGBLOOD HART

plus guest  CROW BLACK CHICKEN  _Main Room_      http://www.ayhmusic.com/ The cosmic American love child of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray! Known as a “musician’s musician,” Alvin Youngblood Hart’s praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to guitar gods Eric Clapton & Mick Taylor. Alvin Youngblood Hart has been nominated for and received a Grammy Award. Since the release of his 1996 debut recording, the all-acoustic BIG MAMA’S DOOR, Hart has relayed his eclectic musical message around the world. A devout follower of the “no barriers” approach carved out by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and the late great Doug Sahm, Hart aims to delight the masses and points to challenge the so-called blues purists. Based on the strength of his record debut and the allure of his live shows, Hart received five nominations at the 1997 W.C. Handy Blues Awards. He was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Acoustic Artist, and Best Traditional Blues Artist and his album (BIG MAMA’S DOOR) was nominated for both Acoustic Album of the Year and Traditional Album of the Year. He received the award for Best New Artist. Hart also received two Living Blues Awards that same year. Alvin Youngblood  has recorded with celebrated producer Jim Dickinson with START WITH THE SOUL, a record hailed as a new-breed Southern Rock classic; this album was chosen by the New York Times as one of the top 10 releases of 2000, as well as the BBC’s Blues Record of the Year.  Hart shared Living Blues Magazine’s best guitarist honours with fellow road dog Big Jack Johnson. His album  MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER is  a rock guitar free-for-all, paying homage to fallen and missing rockers like Phil Lynott and Sly Stone. Hart’s songwriting, singing and electric guitar prowess are all championed on this project and showcase the versatility he continuously strives to offer his fans and profession. Hart collaborated with several Memphis area musicians in the Craig Brewer cult hit film “Black Snake Moan” by both serving as a guitar tutor to the film’s leading actor, Samuel L. Jackson, and recording a duet with the film’s female lead, Christina Ricci, for the film’s riveting soundtrack. He also toured with  Rock-n-Roll legend Bo Diddley for what turned out to be Diddley’s final American tour. Hart joined forces with friends Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, Black Crowes) and Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tri-State Coalition) to form “The South Memphis String Band”. The fun-loving trio was quickly dubbed by the media as an “acoustic super group”. The 2011 Blues Music Awards (The Blues Foundation) nominated their record for “Best Acoustic Album”. The group released a second album in the spring of 2012. A third record is in the making. When not touring solo or plugged in with his revered rock trio “Alvin Youngblood Hart’s Muscle Theory”, Hart enjoys researching, collecting, repairing and modifying obscure musical equipment.

CROW BLACK CHICKEN

http://www.crowblackchicken.com/ Since forming in 2009, Crow Black Chicken have earned back-pats aplenty for their dirty southern blues sound. This power trio of Christy O Hanlon (Vocals, Guitar), Stephen McGrath (Bass) and Gev Barrett (Drums, Backing vocals) combine elements of folk, hard rock and the blues of bands like Gov’t Mule to create their greasy no bullshit blues rock sound. CBC gained their first big break by winning the All Ireland battle for Glastonbury in 2011 thanks to their EP “Organic” and their raw live show. Since the release of debut album “Electric Soup” in 2012, the trio from Ireland’s deep south have won the adoration of many playing major festivals and countless venues across Ireland and Europe. Their sophomore LP “Rumble Shake” reached #12 in the Irish charts solidifying CBC as Ireland’s foremost original blues rock act.

EMPIRE CIRCUS

Here’s what the press are saying about these guys!!

Feelgood alt-pop work, which contributes towards rather than detracts from an enjoyable debut. Anthem-esque with clever lyrics” -The Sunday Times

It’s honest, well played. Impressive” – Mail On Sunday

“Take the squally synth of Currents, where the four-piece brilliantly meddle with tempo and texture; Empire Circus have hit upon a formula that largely works” -The Irish Times

Empire Circus have delivered an impressively entertaining debut”- Hotpress

“Empire Circus’s début EP strikes a nice balance between shamelessly conventional funky pop and alternative leaning rock“- Golden Plec

“By the time the last song ends you will have enjoyed this album, from ‘There Is A Light’ to ’Currents’, both being at either ends of the spectrum. Empire Circus know the science and have doubled checked the math”- MRU

The Story: Empire Circus are a four piece Alt Pop outfit who have tapped into the panache of Two Door Cinema Club, the demeanor of Arcade Fire and the general cool suave of Gorillaz… then morphed out at the other side with a resonant sound under the guise of Empire Circus.

Having lived and played music full time in the USA together for 7 years, they returned to Ireland in 2008 opened a Music School in South County Dublin – www.puremusic.ie. Then in the spring & summer of 2012 the band spent time writing, demoing and working feverishly on creating music. They wrote some songs. Actually they wrote lots of songs. Some they really enjoyed playing, others… not so much. So they took the fun ones and went to a studio in Brooklyn and crafted an album of 12 tunes that made them want to pull some pretty ridiculous dance moves. This was all done under the influence of Producer/Engineer/Mixer; Bryce Goggin (Ramones, The Morning Glories, Antony and the Johnsons).

Empire Circus’ sound is all about the thrill in rhythm and melody. Their debut album, including songs such as “A Day in the Life of a Superhero”, “I Know Better” and “All I Need” will assuredly leave you powerless against the urge to get up, get crazy, dance and sing like you never have before.

Band statement: The Future (the end is nowhere in sight): We still have dreams of conquering the world and selling the t-shirt, but for now we will be bringing dodgy dance moves and above all, music that electrifies the soul.

Empire Circus’ self-titled debut album is OUT NOW. Link is here: https://itunes.apple.com/ie/album/empire-circus/id680069958
