COLUMBIA MILLS
COLUMBIA MILLS
plus guests THIS OTHER KINGDOM _ Main Venue _ Whelans, Saturday 13th June // Tickets go on sale this Friday 1st May at 10am After a very successful Dublin show at The Workman’s Club, Columbia Mills are back on the gig scene this June 13th at Whelans. Columbia Mills celebrates their current EP ‘Factory Settings’. Their next single from this EP is set to be “The Advanced Stages Of Falling Apart”. From the unsuspecting seaside town of Bray on Irelands east coast emerge Columbia mills. A collective tour de force creating a head-onistic mix of musical textures, reverb saturated guitars, glorious beats & beautiful tragic sounds. Imagine the Jesus and Mary chain making a ‘Screamadelica’ and you’re close. The bands name comes from the legendary building based on Dublin’s Quays. In the early 90s the building became a mecca for the illegal rave scene bringing people together from all walks of life and all musical tastes. The diversity of music and social classes is something that has left a lasting impression on the city and has not since been rediscovered since Police put an end to the institution in an early morning raid. Columbia Mills touch on the 80s synth sounds of New Order and The Cure and fuse them with the 90s indie guitar sounds of The Verve and Primal Scream on a bed of electronic and organic beats a la Massive Attack and LCD Sound System. While you may hear the bands influence’s in their music, you will also hear a fresh modern sound that aims to draw the listener into the unique head space that is Columbia Mills. There is little known about the band that seems to have come out of nowhere. Emerging from the wreckage of an economic collapse. Mutterings of previous bands, part time DJs and singer songwriters all adds to the mystery of how the band was formed. Indeed it is unknown how many people are involved in the collective. While it is clear the band have worked hard on their sound it is important to note that underneath the production there are songs of real life, drawing their power from deep personal experience. Nothing is contrived. If you strip the songs down to the bones they will still get under your skin. There is an honesty and an arrogance to the songs. This band have been through the mill and are not afraid to sing about it. Lyrically, subjects touch on urban decay, self-destruction, institutional abuse, family feuds and falling in love with the wrong people. Their music gets into your head, moves you, takes you someplace familiar yet new. Listen up. You’re going to fall hard for this band. What the media say… Columbia Mills can be described as “darker angrier sound than the aforementioned artists, combining the guitar attack of The Jesus And Mary Chain’s austere shoegaze and hints of synthpop into a sound the group themselves define as Indietronica” – Goldenplec.com ”The next big thing in music” – Brian Adams (Head of Music at Today FM) [in the Irish Times] ”A delicious melting pot of 80s and 90s influences and manages to sound both completely new and utterly familiar” – Ceol Collective. Tickets are €12.50 inclusive of booking fee – available from ticketmaster.ie and outlets nationwideTICKETS

Two fund-raising gigs held earlier this year also raised money for the Dublin charity, Inner City Helping Homeless. Now Peter is calling on EVERY act in the country – new and established acts alike – to sign an album/single/merchandise of theirs and donate it to the monster auction. The mystical source which inspires the oeuvre of Dublin’s premiere narrative driven sci-fi/fantasy stoner rock/krautrock music group CROWHAMMER is widely held to involve esoteric channeling techniques as a contingent aspect of the composition process. At this juncture, this should appear relatively self-evident. In a sincere attempt to render intelligible the dramatic events culminating in the apotheosis of an entire planet, whose specific features are beyond prevailing theoretical understandings of time and space, the group have utilized the recent supermoon – whose astrological significance hardly needs to be underlined – to refine their understanding of this cosmically significant event. The micro-societal happening which constitutes this particular iteration of contemporary rock performance offers the attendee the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the audio/visual rendering of the latest installment within the unfolding chronology which derives its content entirely from recent supermoon sessions. Suffice it to say, its contents are profound, and contain significant ramifications for the fate of Vertexia. While a detailed understanding of the multitudinous sensual effects associated to immersion in the emotional residue of the channeled content still proves illusive, several individuals exposed to it have declared it to be ‘alright.’ Joining CROWHAMMER on the night will be VATICAN II. The ontological freshness exuded by their sheer newness is difficult to overstate. At the time of publication the group possess a 0% online existence ratio with respect to the physical world. The brutal reality of those numbers offer the attendee the opportunity of making first contact with this entity distinctly within a physical domain undiluted by the mechanical destruction of time and space which constitutes the online consumption of cultural commodities. This tabula rasa approach may represent something of an obsolete modality with regard to leisure activity in a saturated information age. But despite any obvious merits represented by the expressive inter-changeability factor of going to a cool rock show with vague or half-baked references to cosmic sillyness maybe you might think they are good. TO RECAP, TWO BANDS, NAMELY CROWHAMMER AND VATICAN II ARE PLAYING A ROCK SHOW SOON. IN WHELAN’S. UPSTAIRS. MIDNIGHT LAD. STANDARD TERMS OF WHELAN’S MIDNIGHT LAD APPLY. MARTIN CARTHY
MARTIN CARTHY
plus guests ANDERSON _ Main Venue _ `Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all’ Q Magazine For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) is the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals’ music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. He’s a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic & electric guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic. In June 1998 he was appointed an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He was named Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2002, and again in 2005 when he also won the award for Best Traditional Track for ‘amous Flower of Serving Men. In the 2007 Folk Awards Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick won Best Duo. In 2008 he won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Best Traditional Track for Cold Haily Rainy Night alongside Eliza Carthy and Chris Wood as part of The Imagined Village project. This is The Imagined Village performing Cold Haily Rainy Night on Later with Jools. This is what the BBC website has to say about Martin Carthy and his award in 2005: “For four decades, Martin Carthy’s work has immeasurably enriched the British folk heritage. He is regarded as one of the finest singers and interpreters of traditional music of the British Isles, as well as a highly influential and much-imitated guitarist. Awarded the MBE for services to English folk music in 1998, his drive and enthusiasm are undiminished and he continues to be one of folk music’s great innovators.”TICKETS
