Tickets for Whelan’s are priced €12 inclusive of booking fee and go on sale tomorrow morning, 8 August at 9am from Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.ie

THE SHIRES

www.facebook.com/theshiresuk The groundswell of interest in country music in the UK is now officially unstoppable. But one of the acts helping to make country cooler than ever on this side of the Atlantic aren’t from Tennessee or Texas, they’re from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. They look and sound great, and they’re all set to take their country-influenced music to the world. Step forward, The Shires. The duo of Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes has swiftly become one of the real buzz bands of 2014. Getting together as recently as May of last year, and with only a handful of live dates under their belt, The Shires have secured the support of a host of industry tastemakers in no time. Decca won the hot contest for their signatures just before they made their official live London debut at the event that confirmed the wave of interest in the country genre, the second annual Country 2 Country Festival at London’s 02 Arena. Now The Shires are ready to gig, and to bring that album home from Nashville. “At the end of the day, all we want to do is write songs and sing them,” says Earle. People will be more than ready to listen, in their country and far beyond. /////////

WARD THOMAS

www.wardthomasmusic.com We were born in 1994 in London after much effort and a long wait on our parent’s part. Together with our elder brother, we grew up on a livestock farm in Hampshire, England. There is a strong seam of creativity on both sides of our family. Our grandmother wrote over forty novels and our great-grandfather was an inventor. Our parents were in a band together and Mum has become a well-recognized painter. Today, our brother is an actor and a playwright.  So friends aren’t surprised that singing is what we love to do most in life. The fact that we choose to sing Country music needs a little more explanation. Our lives haven’t always been perfect or easy. Our parents went through a divorce when we were twelve. We had our share of family tiffs and a broken heart or two along the way, but those are the growing pains that inspired us to think and write about life beyond the fields. However it is our early years of living on the farm that give us our country roots: Cows, chickens, pigs and goats have the same language in rural England as they do below America’s Mason-Dixon line.  So we write and sing about family, friends and the stories that make life real – true Country music. So that is the beginning of our story. Thanks for listening. No matter what country you call home, we hope you’ll want to join us on our journey. /////////

THE RISING

www.therisingmusic.com The Rising are a Country/Rock, Pop/Rock band from Northern Ireland. They have just released their debut Album “Coming Home’ (Renegade Maverick Records/Absolute/Universal Music Group), with the lead single “Still Coming Home To You” being picked up by BBC Radio 2 with the likes of Graham Norton, Alex Lester and Steve Wright championing the track. It has also gained extensive airplay in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Formed from the ashes of former band EXIT. Then a four piece, who released a string of well received EPs and were championed by the likes of Kerrang Magazine. But something wasn’t right, the band strived to make music that was less rowdy and more refined, to replace the overt rock mannerisms with subtle pop stylings and embracing a new roots-based direction. Bringing together a mixture of Pop sensibilities and the polished country nuances of Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift. This is reflected in the fact the band worked with Grammy Winning Engineer Hank Williams who is famed for his work with the aforementioned Urban, Swift and Lady Antebellum. To cement this change the band choose to rebrand completely and named themselves after a Bruce Springsteen album that inspired all members of the band. In a short period of time the band have secured the support of the press, media and industry tastemakers all praising the band “A glorious amalgamation of Rock, Country and Folk – Jim Gellatly”.

GRACE WILDE

The Flaws Return For ‘Sprintime’ With Their Best Album Yet

The Flaws exploded onto the Irish music scene in late 2007 when their debut long player ‘Achieving Vagueness’ was released to universal critical acclaim. It entered the Irish Top 20 and lead to both Choice and Meteor nominations. Having toured the debut for over 18 months playing some amazing shows across the country including sets at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic ’08 and Oxegen the band took a well deserved break.

In October 2010 the band released their new album ‘Constant Adventure’. This much anticipated second album was recorded at Tumbleweed Studios in Dundalk, was self produced and mixed and engineered by Jason Varley. The end result showcased just how much The Flaws have grown as a band, with track after track boasting beautiful harmonies and dazzling guitar interplay.

With the departure of original bass player Dane McMahon in early 2012 the band were forced into a transitional phase. With Paul Mallon picking up bass duties the band continued to perform playing particularly memorable shows in Whelan’s and The Academy in support of their one off single ‘Let’s Fight’. Unsure what to do next the band decided to take an open ended break. The band reconvened in early 2013 and began to exchange ideas. Unbeknownst to all parties, this was to evolve into the initial phase in the writing process of their third album ‘Springtime For The Flaws’.

Combining the drive and urgency of Achieving Vaugeness with the melodic sensibilities of Constant Adventure it became clear to the band that this was their best work to date. Taking matters into their own hands The Flaws decided to record the album themselves giving themselves a creative freedom to fully express themselves without any outside interference. The results speak for themselves. Lead single, the anthemic ‘Animals’ is a prime example of the band at their most potent. Under an exterior made from solid muscle all the hallmarks of the band’s sound are there. With Colin Berrill’s relentless drum attack, Paul Mallon’s pulsing bass, the soaring harmonies, and the sumptuous melodic interplay between Paul Finn and Shane Malone’s, the bands drive is evident. With the album due in Autumn and a renewed sense of purpose this promises to be the most exciting phase of The Flaws thus far.

For one night only, The Dixon’s return to play Whelan’s main venue.

In 1988 or thereabouts, The Dixons drifted together to make a noise which bore little relation to anything else that was knocking around at the time. It was fun but serious, light but heavy, accomplished but amateurish and ramshackle but right.

Eschewing the over-gated minimalism and snake-hipped, leather-trousered posturing so prominent in pop/rock at the time, and without really realising it, the four young musicians crafted something altogether special, with a garagy lo-fi sound that now seems to have pre-cursed some of the mannered beardy Americana you hear now.

ADEBISI SHANK [ALBUM LAUNCH]

ADEBISI SHANK

[ALBUM LAUNCH] LAST EVER IRISH SHOWS plus guest ADULTROCK – Main Venue – Thur 25th & Fri 26th Sept This is the third album launch by a band called Adebisi Shank. Tickets on sale Mon 11th Aug, 9am from Whelanslive.com. Adebisi Shank play an extremely rare Dublin concert on Thursday sept 25 in Whelans, to celebrate the release of their new album “This Is The Third Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank”. The Album is available to stream on The Guardian website now. CLICK HERE This Is The Third Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank: an explosion of optimism and musical Glasnost, an Arab Spring of instrumental harmony embracing all things awesome. It’s the sound of the Berlin Wall falling down. It’s the sound of hashtag winning. It’s the sound of musclemen with lightbulb heads that rupture from their own perfection (see cover art). In a word, it’s the sound of triumph… no matter the consequences. “We were trying to make something euphoric and huge, a universe of our own imagination that we could escape into,” says bassist and masked man Vin. “Our inspirations were more cinematic and fantastical.”This Is The Third Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank bursts with pure rock anthems with undeniably danceable structures. Alongside the band’s penchant for unusual instrumentation is their clever use of vocoder-effected vocals which seems to invite listeners to sing along with our robot overlords. In creating the album’s imaginary universe, Adebisi Shank drew on a hodgepodge of inspirations, including ELO, Enya, Mike Oldfield, Pixar animated films, Crash Bandicoot video game and Game of Thrones. In 2013, the Wexford, Ireland trio consisting of guitarist/vocodist Lar Kaye, drummer Mick Roe and bassist Vin relocated to a secluded house in the wilds of county Wicklow, to avoid distractions and let their imaginations run wild. Writing and recording daily, the result is a multiverse of musical possibilities. Album opener “World In Harmony” begins deceptively like a dying 8-bit robot’s version of Queen’s “We Are The Champions” before erupting into a full-on anthem filled with stadium chants, digital voices, flavor-blasted guitar riffs, chirping synths and pounding rhythms. Elsewhere, “Mazel Tov” portrays a strangely brave new world wherein early 90s digital funk dance pop meets contemporary indie rock to produce a stompingly catchy tune. Likewise, “Turnaround” is led by a cheery synth melody reminiscent of late-80s pop, while aggressive rhythms and chopping guitars pigpile on top. Unlike the previous album’s cavalcade of guest musicians, this recording consists mainly of the core trio writing, performing and producing, with just a few contributions from outsiders – one of which being Lar’s father, Leonard Kaye adding accordion to “Turnaround.” This Is The Third Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on August 12th, 2014.

featuring

TWINKRANES & HALVES

Seven Quarters is an exciting new club night that returns for the third installment of four on Saturday September 13th to Whelan’s of Wexford Street, as part of the venue celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The first two club nights featured some of Ireland’s most exciting live acts including Katie Kim, Jennifer Evans, Patrick Kelleher and Magic Pockets.

We are very excited to announce the line up for the third club which sees the wonderfully charismatic Halves honouring us with their last Irish show of the year and the critically acclaimed experimentalists TWINKRANES taking to the stage. There is limited advance tickets on sale for only 10 euro (including booking fee) which also includes a limited edition vinyl available from http://www.wavtickets.ie/ .

Seven Quarters is different from any other club night happening in Ireland, as we will be giving punters a different limited edition seven inch vinyl, featuring previously unreleased tracks, from the artists performing each club night. This seven inch vinyl will be given away for free to the first 150 people in the door as part of the club entry or to those who purchase one of our advance tickets.

Seven Quarters is a project by Barry Lennon (Richter Collective,Community Of Independents and Hands Up Who Wants To Die) which is set to feature some of the most exciting acts in the Irish music scene and speaking about the next club night he says, “It is great to have had two very successful clubs so far and to have the honour of working with some of Irelands best acts. I am very excited to see Halves play their last show of the year as part of our next club as well as TWINKRANES, who have been blowing away audiences with their live performances lately”.

The name of the club Seven Quarters is based on the idea of the word seven referring to a 7” inch vinyl and the Quarters part is based on the fact the club will happen four times a year.
