“This is a band you want to see in a small venue that’s been packed up to the rafters, their music echoing and pouring out into the streets. Their music is about a “moment”, mainly, that beautiful and wonderful moment where you feel like the world outside of the venue has ceased to exist.” – Leah Dingus (Dingus|International DIY Music)

EOIN GLACKIN

EOIN GLACKIN

Michael MacLennan

Following the release of the critically acclaimed debut, ‘Not Lost’ on Sony in 2011, Eoin Glackin’s eagerly awaited new album “Rain Finally Came” went on release on Friday March 15th via Tuleen Music and IRL. The debut created a platform for Eoin, and one he made great use of, gathering a wide legion of live fans and media followers during its life time.

Two years later and armed with eleven stomping new tracks, Eoin has been hitting the road hard for live shows around Ireland and further afield since the new release.

The album has already given us the single (and title track), “Rain Finally Came”, and now at radio is the folk rock party stomper, “Everyone Is Goin’”, currently receiving strong airplay around the country.

Growing up in Dublin, Eoin spent his days exploring the music from the likes of Kris Kristofferson, The Beatles and Cat Stevens much to the amusement of his classmates, who were firmly on the Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene team. He started playing piano at 9 and taught himself how to play the guitar at 15. Eoin cites Damien Dempsey as one of his key inspirations. Indeed Damien was pivotal to Eoin’s approach to music and his decision to make his own!

“I was at home,” he says. “My dad walked into my room and told me there was some singer-songwriter from Dublin on the TV that I should see. Damien was beginning ‘Negative Vibes’ and three lines into the song I felt something hit me like I’d never felt before, he just had a truth in his voice and his words. Growing up, there had never been that one band or singer that changed my whole outlook on things. Damien did that for me.”

Inspired by Dempsey’s performance and songs Glackin began writing and busking.

A couple of years later and eager to pursue a career in music, Eoin jumped on a plane to London. He spent his time writing and playing in the plethora of open mic nights around the city. At one of these open mic nights Eoin was approached by a promoter who liked what he heard and was subsequently asked to attend a meeting at Sony’s office in the UK. “I walked in to the office with my guitar and began playing. The guy looked at me and said ‘haven’t you got anything recorded?”, Eoin laughs. “I only had my guitar and a load of songs. It was pretty unorthodox!”

He decided then to start to record demos. He returned to Dublin and got cracking.

His early demos caught the attention of London based Spirit Music & Media who loved Eoin’s style and wanted to work with him. As a result, he returned to London and began recording his debut album, the aforementioned “Not Lost”. The album was produced by Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, The Clash, Beth Orton, Red Hot Chilli Peppers).

“Not Lost” was released by Sony Music Ireland on June 3rd, 2011. He toured Ireland and the UK extensively, strapping on his guitar at any available opportunity. He received great support for his music, quickly achieving playlist support at radio on a national level.

Parting ways from Sony (‘amicably’ Eoin stresses), his second album Rain Finally Came was recorded in Westland Studios. Ian Grimble got involved once again on producer duties.

Having already supported international heroes of his like Joan Armatrading, Beth Orton and Sam Baker as well as the finest in Irish talent, Eoin’s live reputation grows and grows and as he says –

“I am just really excited to see where this new album and chapter takes me”.

THE NIGHTINGALES + TED CHIPPINGTON

Whelanslive.com presents

THE NIGHTINGALES

plus special guests

TED CHIPPINGTON

Whelanslive and Word of Mouth Agency is proud to present the first ever Irish tour of legendary UK post-punk band The Nightingales in support of their new self-released album For Fuck’s Sake, which has already garnered very favourable reviews from the likes of MOJO – “Heartening evidence of the British art of mentally transforming ennui and chagrin into something approaching gold” – 4/5 stars.

Opening each night of the tour is infamous alternative comedian (and Stewart Lee’s hero) Ted Chippington, who will also be making his Irish debut.

THE NIGHTINGALES

www.thenightingales.org.uk

Birmingham’s original punk group The Prefects had been part of The Clash’s ‘White Riot Tour’, recorded a couple of Peel sessions, released a 45 on Rough Trade and, years after splitting up, had a retrospective CD released by NY label Acute Records to all round glowing reviews – from Rolling Stone to webzines.

The Nightingales was formed by former members of The Prefects following that band’s demise in 1979. Described in John Robb’s definitive book on ‘post punk’ (‘Death To Trad Rock’) as “The misfits’ misfits” and comprising an ever-fluctuating line up, based around lyricist/singer Robert Lloyd, the Nightingales enjoyed cult status in the early ’80’s as darlings of the credible music scene and were championed by John Peel, who said of them – “Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980’s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans”.

The group recorded a bunch of critically acclaimed singles (Almost always ‘Single Of The Week’ in the music press) and three albums, plus many radio sessions for their great supporter Peel. They also regularly toured the UK and Northern Europe, as headliners and supporting acts as diverse as Bo Diddley and Nico.

In the late Eighties the Nightingales stopped working but, following the occasional gig between times, they re-grouped in 2004, with Lloyd being joined by original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley.

After fucking about with various wastrels, precious sorts and mercenaries the group arrived at its current line up, which features Lloyd, Apperley, Andreas Schmid from Faust on bass and ex Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson.

Since restarting the group have been more productive than ever – releasing five 7″ vinyl singles, a 10″ EP and five studio albums (plus two live albums), touring England, mainland Europe and USA numerous times and recording many radio sessions along the way. They have been invited to play various festivals in Europe and the States, including Glastonbury and SXSW. Their “Let’s Think About Living” 45 was ‘Single Of The Week’ on BBC 6 Music and they have continued to receive regular rave reviews for their records and live shows.

The group’s “No Love Lost” album was released by Cooking Vinyl in 2012. Described by Mojo as “Brilliant. One of the fiercest and most exhilarating rock records in ages” the record features guests, U.S avant-garde composer, Katherine Young on bassoon and Hans-Joachim Irmler, founder of krautrock legends Faust, on keyboards.

The Nightingales recorded another album at Faust Studio in September 2013. “For Fuck’s Sake” is a self released, limited edition vinyl LP available only at the group’s gigs. The band will be playing live shows in Europe and USA over the coming year and they are very pleased to be performing in Ireland for the very first time in May 2014.

“Contender for gig of the year” – MOJO Magazine

“Their freshest and most subtly intoxicating work to date” – The Observer

“The missing link between Can and the Glitter band” – The Quietus

TED CHIPPINGTON

VIDEO: The Culture Show – Stewart Lee meets Ted Chippington (2007)

The Nightingales’ buddy and regular touring partner is legendary, cult ‘anti comedian’ Ted Chippington. Once described in Sounds magazine as “the funniest man alive”, Chippington’s ruthless disregard for the conventions of stand-up nonetheless made him a perennial outcast from the 1980s comedy scene.

At a time when politically right-on performers such as Ben Elton and Harry Enfield were at their peak, Ted initially struggled to break through to a wider audience. Of course, this was of no concern to Ted who continued to plough his own individual anarchistic furrow and was eventually to have a couple of minor hit records and to be recognised as a major influence by the majority of todays ‘alternative’ comedians.

His fans remain convinced of his status as the neglected comedy genius, and remember him with an affection that is rarely afforded to stand-up comics. Indeed, a host of comedians, including Stewart Lee, Phill Jupitus, Simon Munnery, Josie Long and many others, staged ‘Tedstock’ at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre a few years back with the proceeds enabling the release of the 4 CD box set “Walking Down The Road… A History Of Ted Chippington”. The box set was heralded by major articles in the Guardian and Independent newspapers, plus a Ted feature on BBC TV’s Culture Show, and quickly sold out.

Reportedly retired from showbusiness in the 1990s to pursue a truck driving career in USA and Mexico, Ted is now back. His most recent release is a 10” EP titled “Blues Fan” and he has recently played throughout the UK and in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the Nightingales.

“A mixture of surrealism and insolent provocation and uncompromising boredom” – Stewart Lee

SINEAD WHITE

SINEAD WHITE

plus guest

Sinéad White is a singer/songwriter/human being/Multi-instrumentalist who is at the borderline of stardom.

—-

Sinead’s fresh approach to songwriting is captivatingly charming and uniquely powerful, while she manages to hold the energy candle on both ends of the stick, she then balances on her head, floor stomping tunes that leave you in awe. She carries in her made up case – an amazing guitar style – interesting, profound and intelligent lyrics, all wheeled in by a dynamic voice that is as dramatic as it is haunting.

This is Sinead’s first real headline show – bringing everything and the living room – 2 Vocals,1 percussion, 100 kazoos, 1 double bass, many horns, synth, keys, drums and anything else she feels the conceptual show needs. Fully scored of course.

—-

Her musical career started at the age of 7 when she started learning to play the piano. Her love of the piano spanned long into her teens, and with incessant practice managed to make her family hate every Elton John, Queen and John Lennon song known to man.

At that point, after getting a loan of a classical guitar she taught herself a few chords and began writing her own songs. Throughout her teens she was involved in various bands and wrote a lot of terrible music. She went to college to study classical music but after a year decided to drop out to try to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter. That was last year.

Since then she’s played all over Dublin, various spots around Ireland, Europe and Toronto, Canada. She’s been on RTE multiple times*, FM104, played festivals Longitude and a was favourite at the Electric Picnic last summer.

She has just finished recording her first album and is set to release it in the coming months.

What other people say:

“Sinead White has so much talent – we honestly can’t understand how she is not already a household name in Ireland. It can only be a matter of time. Seriously. This young lady can really sing and really play… and she writes great songs too. If we could buy shares in her – we would. It can only be a matter of time before Other Voices and Later… with Jools Holland come calling. Sinead is currently in the process of recording her first EP – and she plans to record her debut album later in 2013. Catch her live at the Storehouse on July 20th. You’ll thank us on the way home. We promise.”

“Flat Battery” by Sinead White is a seriously catchy acoustic led number which show off Sinead’s interesting voice. Sinead has a clever way with lyrics and the playing is top notch here, with a satisfyingly chunky bass line during the chorus, before the acoustic guitar sees us out.”

Sullivan & Gold & Let’s Set Sail

Amongst the first glut of bands ever to play with Homebeat The Dirty 9s stood out for many reasons.

Immediate hooks, soaring choruses and delicate musicianship were their hallmark sound, but what made them special was the heart they played it all with and we were lucky to have them perform for us a number of times.

But sometimes, in art as in life, the light dims a little and you need to glimpse at each other through a new perspective.. life moves on, people move on, music moves on and bands move on…

Grasping the urge to reinvent, The 9’s have gladly stayed together as musicians but they have been brave enough to embrace change and re form their musical identity as Wild Promises.

So, with spring in the air and all-pervasive never-ending change all around us we are delighted to help host their official rebirth ‘At First Light’ in Whelanslive (upstairs).

It will be a night of song, film, continuation and rebirth.

Performing on the night:
