No surprises? Well, not quite. Tradiohead take the songs of Radiohead and re-imagine them using instruments more often associated with Irish traditional music – Occupy Oxford, if you will. The quartet play songs from classic albums like The Bends,OK Computer and Kid A, as well as more recent Radiohead records like Hail To The Thief and In Rainbows.
Tradiohead return to Whelan’s after making their presence felt around the country, taking in trad festivals and the Electric Picnic on their itinerary, and a live session with Nadine O’Regan on Phantom FM, as well as an interview with Hot Press.
The band are Jimi McDonnell on vocals, Philip Fogarty on accordion and bodhrán, Pat Hargan on guitar, and Michael Chang on violin, viola and mandolin.
Brothers Oisín and Tadhg of Mo Hat Mo Gheansaí are coming together with friends for yet another end-of-year bash. In keeping with what is now an annual tradition, artists of repute from home and across the waters will come together again to make some magical music and a great night for all!

‘The musical chemistry between Scottish fiddle legend Alasdair Fraser and young cello ace Natalie Haas is a rare, felicitous thing.’
Boston Herald
‘Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh’s beautiful airs had us begging for more. Every corner seemed to echo with her voice long after the music had stopped.’
Dublin Evening Press
The remote Hebridean isle of Iona is a unique place, sitting at the crossroads of Irish and Scottish culture and at the same time a sending place for monks and travellers sailing west to the New World. It’s the inspiration for Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser, Californian cellist Natalie Haas and Donegal native Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh as they explore the connections between traditional Irish, Scottish and Old Time American music, following in the musical footsteps of tunes that have emigrated and found their way home once more.
The result: all the raw beauty and energy you’d expect from a community on the edge of the known world, as Haas returns the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music. It’s a dream collaboration for Fraser, long regarded as one of Scotland’s premier fiddlers and a proud ambassador for Gaelic culture and traditions. He and Haas have been creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across Europe and America, and for this tour they are performing for the first time with the inestimable Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. One of the foremost singers in the Irish language and co-founder of trad legends Altan, Mairéad will revisit the themes of ‘Edge’ and ‘Threshold’ explored on her first solo album ‘Imeall’, together with Haas and Fraser.

Republic of Loose formed in Dublin in 2003. Their debut album “This is the Tomb of the Juice” was released on Big Cat Records in 2004 to critical acclaim in Ireland and the UK. Several tours of the U.K, US, and Europe followed including support slots with The Roots, The Neville Brothers, Dilated Peoples, Scissors Sisters, The Zutons and Alabama 3, with festival appearances at Glastonbury, T-In the Park, Reading/Leeds, Finsbury Fleadh, Furia France, Transmusikales, Nice Jazz and Oxegen Ireland. With a prestigious Meteor Ireland Music Award under their belts, the Loose went back to the studio in 2005 to begin work on the follow up to ‘This is the Tomb of the Juice’
In April 2006 Republic of Loose released their second album “Aaagh” on their own Loaded Dice Records. It debuted in the Irish album charts at No.2 receiving nominations for both Meteor and the prestigious Choice “Best Album” Awards. The album spawned four massive radio hits at home with lead single “Comeback Girl” receiving
huge airplay on U.S. radio stations Indie 103 and KCRW. This led to the lisencing of tracks from the album to ‘Real World’ producers Bunim-Murray on MTV in the US. The album spawned radio hits in France and as far afield as South-Africa, Indonesia and The Philippines. By the end of the year, the album had gone Platinum in Ireland.
Republic of Loose spent most of 2007 touring Europe and the US with sold out shows in France, Italy, Holland, New-York, Los Angeles and the U.K. A US tour with Snow Patrol preceded a series of headline gig’s in the US. In LA, the band were invited by Sex Pistol Steve Jones to perform on Jonseys Jukebox on indie.103 Later in 2007 Republic of Loose returned home to begin work on the follow up to Aaagh!.
While they were in the studio the band were approached by Sinead O’Connor to produce and perform on a track from her new album. The result was the mesmerizing Curtis Mayfield cover ‘We people(who are darker than blue). The band debuted the track with Sinead O’Connor at the 2008 Meteor Awards. As the new Loose album reached completion, Mick Pyro was invited to join Irelands leading musicians on a tribute to legendary Irish folk singer Ronnie Drew. The song brought together the finest talent Ireland has to offer on a moving tribute to the Dubliners singer.
The eagerly anticipated third album from Republic of Loose, ‘Vol IV Johnny Pyro and the Dance of Evil’ was released on May 2nd 2008. The album comes in at a ‘disc filling’ sixteen songs!, featuring guest vocals from US Hip-Hop legend Styles P and Sinead O’Connor. The album has already spawned two massive hits in ‘I Like Music’ and the bands biggest single to date ‘The Steady Song’
A national tour with sold out shows across Ireland followed. This included seven nights at Dublin’s prestigious Academy (1000 capacity). At the Dublin gig’s, the band were joined onstage by various special guests including Sinead O’Connor, Snow Patrol and Shane MacGowan.
2009 saw the Loose travelling back to the US for three sold out tours. They returned to Ireland to play at Oxegen 2009 and to open up for U2 at Croke Park on their 360 tour. In December 2009 Republic of Loose were nominated by Author Irvine Welsh in Q Magazines ‘Albums of the Century’.
The Loose have continued to license music to various films and TV shows including NBC and MTV in the US, Dr.Who confidential on the BBC and the new Gerard Depardieu film “Bouquet Final”.
Republic of Loose have been heating up the airwaves across Europe and America with national airplay from amongst others, Jo Whiley on Radio 1, Eddie Temple-Morris on Xfm, Dermot O’Leary on Radio 2, The Trophy Twins on Radio 1 and appearances on MTV2. Steve Jones has continued to champion the band in LA.

The latest release is a single entitled “The Fall”, released in early June. Seanie and the band (Kenneth Coyne, Tommy O’Hora, Sebastian Kadhja) will be embarking on a tour to promote the single. see www.seanievaughanmusic.com
Seanie was delighted to reach no. 5 in the Irish indie charts upon the release of the album and he regards this as a personal triumph but he also sees it as a small step on what we know will be a long and fruitful career in music. There are several obvious influences that are incorporated into Seanie’s music including Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Ocean Colour Scene and Damien Rice yet Seanie sees the great diversity of music as being the true beauty of it. ‘Altered Vision’ is an excellent debut album but the live set surpasses it with its energy and flow.
Tracks from the album have received acclaim when they have been played on BBC Radio 2, RTE Radio 1, 98fm, Nova and Galway Bay FM. Seanie has also had media write-ups from a variety of newspapers and magazines including The Star, The Mail on Sunday and Hotpress as well as various regional publications.

The Irish trio of Micháel Keating, Cathal Histon and Brendan McInerney under the guise of Bleeding Heart Pigeons are set to release their debut, self-titled EP on 16th December through Virgin. The band have made the EP’s opening track ‘Visiting Myself In Hospital’ available to stream from Soundcloud now. https://soundcloud.com/two-tap-digital/visiting-myself-in-hospital/s-Jfnil
Bleeding Heart Pigeons was incubated entirely away from other artists, the band having met in a music school in their local village. The three musicians – all still in their teens – are based outside Limerick, Ireland, and have had virtually no contact with the world of music. “We’ve barely met another band or artist,” Keating says. “We have a bizarre background.” The journey to Limerick takes some 45 minutes. To encounter artists of the sort they now listen to, the trio must make the four hour trip to Dublin. “We haven’t seen much live music,” Keating says.
Given their seclusion, it is perhaps unsurprising that Bleeding Heart Pigeons have forged an entirely singular sound. They are quietly operatic, theatrical in the Beckettian sense, making music that warps and dismembers the fundamental tropes of alternative rock. The trio veer between Greenwood-esque guitar attack and eerie piano lullaby, between trebly finger picking and droning electronics. They seem to hold together a vast palette of sounds, all of which they have accreted not through watching other bands but through an obsessive perusal of the internet; through a new form of magpie-esque record collecting.
Despite the band’s rural roots, the Bleeding Heart Pigeons EP sets its sights not on Ireland but on Colorado, USA. On 20 April 1999, two students armed themselves with semi-automatic weapons, entered Columbine High School, and conducted one of the worst massacres America has ever suffered. Bleeding Heart Pigeons’ EP is a response to the shootings; an attempt to interrogate the psychology of Eric Harris, one of the two killers.
This liberal approach to composition, and the EP’s refusal to provide clear answers on Columbine, are both reflected in Keating’s own perceptions of music.
“John Cage has this quote,” he says, “where he talks about music. He says it’s not a way to create order out of chaos, or to suggest that the world should be better. It’s just a way of opening yourself up to living your life properly – opening yourself up to the world around you. It’s about your relationship with the world around you.”

The band’s name, taken from a bible quotation, evokes questions surrounding their personal and musical background. “We were brought up within the church, so questioning religion, overcoming the fear of challenging leaders, and provoking the growth of new ideas are reoccurring themes on this record,” explainsLead singer Kris Platt.
Exploring these aspects is a central theme for the band’s debut album ‘Everything I’ve Learnt’, the title is taken from the lyric “…everything I’ve learnt amounts to nothing”. Although sounding literal, the record’s name holds a more profound meaning regarding the band’s growth.
Reminiscent of early British post-hardcore (Reuben, Idlewild, Biffy Clyro and Hundred Reasons) and the harmony-driven US rock of Brand New and Manchester Orchestra, ‘Everything I’ve Learnt’ still manages to find its own place amongst these behemoths.
“We wouldn’t be a band if it wasn’t for acts like SixStarHotel and Panama Kings,” drummer Jamie Neish points out. “Those bands meant a lot to us early on, they gave us the confidence to do our own thing. Growing up with big bands playing big stages made music seem untouchable, but after seeing local bands performing in tiny venues to crowds of die-hard followers, we felt like this was something we could actually accomplish.”
During live performances, MTC provides an enthralling, uplifting and participatory experience for all, from the smallest of European club shows up to the bigger stages. They’ve already supported the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Feeder, Dinosaur Pile Up and Twin Atlantic

JOY KILLS SORROW
plus guests
With its bold new brand of acoustic music, Joy Kills Sorrow pushes right through the envelope and out the other side. The Boston-based stringband brings a decidedly modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs. While the group pays due homage to its Bluegrass roots—its name refers to one of the first radio stations to broadcast the music of Bill Monroe—the band truly excels in its rich and textured treatment of more contemporary material. Boasting a full arsenal of original songs, Joy Kills Sorrow plumbs the entire spectrum of its spare instrumentation, effortlessly merging influences as diverse as folk, rock, pop, and jazz. The songs that emerge are dark and often funny, ruminating on modern life and love with eloquence and wit. The result is a radical new strain of folk music, one that bravely breaks with tradition even as it salutes the past.
Formed under the banner “a modern American stringband,” Joy Kills Sorrow first emerged out of Boston’s thriving folk music scene in 2005, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2007. Two years and several band members later, Joy Kills Sorrow is poised to make its mark with a new lineup of some of the area’s finest young talent. Founding member Matthew Arcara, a subtle and expressive guitarist, was the 2006 winner of Winfield’s National Flatpicking Championship and has performed with such luminaries as Darol Anger and David Grier. Joy Kills Sorrow’s newest addition, mandolin virtuoso Jacob Joliff, is Berklee’s first full-scholarship mandolin student and a veteran performer, having toured professionally since age eleven and shared the stage with the likes of David Grisman and Mike Marshall. Wesley Corbett, a banjoist of uncommon facility and grace, has toured the country with Crooked Still, the Biscuit Burners, and the Bee Eaters, and was featured in the August 2008 issue of Banjo Newsletter. Emma Beaton, the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Awards’ Young Performer of the Year, adds an earthy, powerful presence to the band as its newly-minted vocalist.
Since its inception, Joy Kills Sorrow has performed at theaters, listening rooms, and festivals across the continent and has been featured on nationally syndicated radio programs. In 2007, the group won first prize in the Podunk Bluegrass Festival Band Contest; that same year, they were deemed the “‘poster children’ for the burgeoning Americana format” by Sing Out! magazine. The band has evolved considerably in the years since then, and their sophomore effort promises to deliver. Slated for release in 2010, the new album, entitled Darkness Sure Becomes This City, was produced by Eric Merrill and features a wealth of original material from members of Joy Kills Sorrow as well as some fine new songs from other composers. Darkness Sure Becomes This City is an accomplished piece of work, laced throughout with polished arrangements and pop-inflected melodies. With it, Joy Kills Sorrow gracefully combines the old and the new, and the outcome, however surprising, is sublime.
“True ensemble playing – the sublimation of egos to a sound that’s beyond individuals – as on this album, is exhilarating. This is the second release by Boston-based Joy Kills Sorrow, the first with a significantly new line-up. They were mesmerizing in their eponymous first recording, but here JKS has found its voice – a band voice. Their name comes from the ’30s radio station where the Monroe Brothers performed (WJKS – Where Joy Kills Sorrow) – and that’s cool. They play guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass – and that’s cool, too. But the coolest thing of all is that they tell the truth. This is fresh stuff. Americana is rife with posers, but JKS is the real thing – talented musicians and singers giving it all they’ve got.”
