Described as ‘sounding like a bar room brawl between The Pogues & Gogol Bordello’, Naymedici have burst on to the UK and Irish music scene with an original fresh sound that is both in your face, and a lot of fun!

Biography

Naymedici play folk as it should be played, loud. Combining gypsy licks, Irish reels, punk guitars and thrashing drums, Naymedici have burst on to the UK and Irish music scene with an original fresh sound that is both in your face, and a lot of fun! Naymedici have quickly become regarded as one of the most promising and prolific new talents to emerge from the Manchester music scene in recent years.

Their sound is a unique mixture of Balkan and Irish music, and has been described as “sounding like a bar room brawl between The Pogues & Gogol Bordello” . Their gigs are bouncy, lively and energetic, using gypsy melodies and Irish reels. The band has certainly gone from strength to strength over the past number of years, ensuring a heavy booking schedule for the UK and Irish festival circuit, often stealing the show with their passionate, mile-a-minute sets.

2013 has been kind to Naymedici so far. Their reputation for lively bouncing sets allowed them to get a top slot at this years Cheltenham Festival, where they were the only band to play in the Guinness Village on Gold Cup day in front of a sold out 80,000 strong crowd. They have recently been in the studio, and released their second single ‘Koo Koo The Bird Girl’ on April 13th, and have been played on numerous radio stations including BBC6 Music on Tom Robinson’s show, and RTE2XM in Ireland.

Naymedici released their first single ‘Paddy McGee’ with B side ‘Whiskey John’ on Knackers Yards records at Academy 3 in July 2012 before Headline slots at both Kendal Calling and YNOT Festival later that summer. In between that they managed to fit in their 3rd Irish tour, which allowed them to play at prestigious venues such as Crane Lane in Cork, and De Barras in Clonakilty.

After falling love with Ireland on their previous tours, the boys finally decided to take the plunge, and moved to West Cork earlier this year. Since moving, they are now gigging heavily, and have been able to bring their sound to top venues all around the country. They have been in the studio, and will be looking to release their debut EP in the next couple of months.

“These guys are f***ing on it!” – Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting)

“What better way to combat the black dog of depression than with the life-affirming fun and energy of Naymedici” – Tom Robinson (BBC Introducing)

“Sounding like a bar room brawl between The Pogues & Gogol Bordello” – De Barras, Clonakilty

JOHN SPILLANE

Whelanslive.com presents

JOHN SPILLANE

+ guest

John returns to Whelan’s for a special one off date. John also has a new TV series Spillane Na Fánaí on TG4 starting on Sept 15th (See Below) and releases a new album Life In An Irish Town.

Tickets €15 including booking fee available to buy online from www.wavtickets.ie or call the WAV Box Office [Lo-call 1890 200 078] or call in person to Camden Row (main entrance to Whelan’s venue)

John Spillane returns in September with his 9th studio album, ‘Life In An Irish Town’. The album, his first since 2011’s ‘A Rock To Cling To”, is the soundtrack to the forthcoming TG4 series ‘Spillane an Fánaí’ (Spillane The Wanderer).

Spillane an Fánaí is a heart-warming and revealing six part entertainment series presented by singer/ songwriter John Spillane. Combining off-the-cuff encounters with local people, interviews and music sequences, John Spillane spends a week in six different locations, working in a pub and venturing out to meet a host of locals in search of musical inspiration for his songwriting in the uniqueness and character of small town life.

Spillane an Fánaí is a fascinating Irish-speaking exploration of the history and personality of rural towns outside of the traditional Gaeltacht areas.

The towns John visits are Fethard in Tipperary, Graiguenamanagh in Kilkenny, Cootehill in Cavan, Castleisland in Kerry, Castlepollard in Westmeath and Kiltimagh in Mayo.

The album features 11 tracks, including a re-recording of ‘All the Ways You Wander’ from 1997’s ‘Wells of the World’ album.

VERY NICE QUOTES, INDEED: “ … some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.” Earle Hitchner, premier writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal. “ … funny, quirky, massively entertaining. John is a story teller, a shanachie.” Dan Regan, Founder, Kansas City Irish Festival. “Why isn’t John Spillane a major star? [John] writes catchy, heartfelt folk-pop songs with the bonus of actually meaning something.” The Sunday Business Post (My Dark Rosaleen & The Island of Dreams). “He’s carved a niche writing melodic, compelling, simple songs. Spillane is at his best when his delivery is unforced and lyrical.” Oliver P. Sweeney, The Ticket, Irish Times (”My Dark Rosaleen & The Island of Dreams). “ … glorious technicolour hues that transcend linguistic boundaries; world music for a new world.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times (The Gaelic Hit Factory). “ … these tracks exhibit Spillane’s remarkably prolific output of gorgeous, peaceful tunes.” Lisa Coen, Hot Press (Hey Dreamer). “[John Spillane] delivers the goods yet again. “Hey Dreamer” is a stunner.” Steve Cummins, Hot Press (Hey Dreamer). “Sometimes a need to sing “Gortatagort” comes over me, no request, and no plan. Just a desire to fantasize once more upon that sacred mountain that lies East of Bantry Bay. It was sad, lonesome and extremely beautiful. I bow to its author John Spillane, that poet of Cork. ” Christy Moore 2012
