Hardcore legends Negative Approach play their first ever Irish gig on July 13. Ever since seeing them tearing the place apart at the Melvins ATP, we’ve wanted to do a gig with them. Loose Nut are sadly breaking up, but have kindly agreed to do their last ever show at this, which is an honour for us. Rats Blood are also bringing the ruckus, It’s going to be some night

Negative Approach was born in Detroit, MI. in 1981 with John Brannon on vocals, OP Moore on drums, and Rob & Graham McCulloch playing guitar and bass, respectively. They released one ten song 7” and a full length (both on Touch and Go) before disbanding in 1985. John Brannon went on to form Laughing Hyenas. Negative Approach’s minimalist (read: 30 second songs) and aggressive brand of punk inspired countless hardcore bands around the globe. Their classic LP, Tied Down, is still in print and considered paramount by most any hardcore abecedarian
Gangs are an Independant band made up of Jordan Curtis (Vocals & Bass Guitar) Dan Smith (Guitar) Jonathan Halpin (Drums) James Connolly (Guitar) who write Guitar-based pop songs. Gangs believe that their music is truly experienced in live performances, rather than behind a computer screen.
Gangs are a completely original band and wish to separate themselves from any pre-existing scene or genre. Gangs aim to revive the “Gang” ethic, the comradery, and spirit which has been removed from the core of modern bands. After their gig with NME cover stars Palma Violets, and a headline show in the Academy, Gangs have been quickly making a name for themselves as the fresh new face of indie-pop in Dublin.
Gangs were named as hotpress “Hot for 2013” and also headlined Whelans “ones to watch 2013” at the beginning of the year

In the spring of 1975, Graham Parker, a 24-year-old petrol pump attendant from Surrey, England, began to drive up to London to meet like-minded musicians and get a backing band behind his songs, which he now considered to be stronger and more interesting than anything he was hearing on the radio. By placing an advert in the Melody Maker he met Noel Brown, a guitarist, and Paul “Bassman” Riley, a bass player who had featured in Chilli Willi and The Red Hot Peppers, a so-called “pub rock” band that had recently split up. Riley thought Parker should meet Dave Robinson, a manager who ran a small studio above the Hope and Anchor pub in Islington. Robinson had previously managed Brinsley Schwarz, another demised pub rock outfit that included its eponymous guitarist, Nick Lowe on bass and Bob Andrews on keyboards.
Lights went off in Robinson’s head when he heard Parker’s songs, and shortly after recording some demos, began to ease Schwarz and Andrews, along with a young rhythm section comprised of Andrew Bodnar on bass and Steve Goulding on drums, into place behind Parker. Together with Martin Belmont, the former guitarist of Ducks Deluxe, yet another alleged pub rock band that had also called it quits, they began rehearsing that summer.
Parker and the Rumour’s first album “Howlin’ Wind” was recorded in London in late 1975 and released in April 1976 to widespread critical acclaim. This was followed in the same year by “Heat Treatment” and a hit EP, “The Pink Parker,” released on pink vinyl. The band played a handful of small venues starting in late ‘75 before opening for the hit band Ace (“How Long”) on a concert tour. Within a year they were headlining concert hall tours in the UK themselves and toured America twice, driving around in a station wagon and picking up gigs wherever Dave Robinson could find them. Parker’s label, Mercury Records, the American arm of Phonogram, paid scant attention to the band. With punk rock and new wave still a year and a half away from making any impression, Mercury failed to see a marketing angle to use and therefore left them, much to Dave Robinson’s annoyance, largely to fend for themselves in the land of Styx and Kansas. But their critical acclaim and fervent and growing fan base could not be denied and by 1978, despite the mixed reaction to their third album “Stick To Me,” released in 1977, they made steady progress and began to gain a reputation for being a premier live band throughout the world.
Finally, after the lack of support from Mercury, Parker signed a lucrative deal with Arista records and released the Jack Nitzsche produced “Squeezing Out Sparks” in 1979. The album, which contained such classics as “You Can’t Be Too Strong,” “Discovering Japan” and “Passion Is No Ordinary Word” reached #44 in the US album charts, sold a quarter of a million copies and was widely hailed as a masterpiece. Parker and the Rumour toured extensively in the year of its release, beginning at Belfast’s Witlow Hall on February 2nd and ending at the Town Hall, Auckland, New Zealand on the 26th of November, with very little time off in between.
They made their last album together, “The Up Escalator,” with Nicky Hopkins and Danny Federici replacing Bob Andrews on piano and organ respectively.
In May 2011, Parker called the Rumour members out of the blue to work with him once again on a new album that would be their first together in over 30 years.
The new album, “Three Chords Good,” was recorded in July of that year. In a strange quirk of fate, not more than two weeks after the band confirmed that they would indeed be conducive to a recording reunion, movie and TV writer/director/producer Judd Apatow got hold of Parker and proposed a meeting. Apatow loosely described to Parker a movie project he was writing in which he thought Parker might have a small part to play. The movie, entitled “This Is 40,” was put into wide theatrical release in December 2012 and became a number three box office hit in its first weekend. It features Parker acting as himself as well as a duo performance (with Tom Freund) and with the Rumour. The Blu Ray/DVD was released in May 2013 and features extra footage of Parker and the band as well as an 18-minute feature called “Long Emotional Ride.” Parker will be in Los Angeles in June to receive a “Top Box Office” award from ASCAP movie and TV department for his musical contributions to “This Is 40.”
Three Chords Good was released in November 2012 and followed by two USA tours featuring the Rumour once again reunited with Parker.
“Don’t Ask Me Questions,” a documentary by the Gramaglia Brothers (“End Of The Century: The Story Of The Ramones”) has been in the works for over ten years and was basically finished when Parker announced to the film makers that he was about to do what he swore he would never do: reform the Rumour. The Gramaglias therefore filmed the entire recording sessions in conjunction with Judd Apatow and also shot footage of Parker and the Rumour in Hollywood on the movie set. The documentary was shown on BBC4 early in 2013 and received overwhelmingly positive reactions. It will eventually be released on DVD.
In August 2013 Shout/Factory will release a DVD entitled “This Is Live,” the complete performances of Graham Parker and the Rumour performing 12 songs at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles on the set of the Judd Apatow movie.
Strictly over 18′s, I.D. may be required.

OTHER CREATURES
Other Creatures are a new Dublin band consisting of three members. They formed a year ago and started playing venues such as upstairs in Whelan’s and the Mercantile, they have recieved some airplay on radio shows such as the John Barker hosted 98fm show Totally Irish.
They are obsessed with the music of the Pixies, Pavement, Elliott Smith among many others!
“Castlestreet” a young band from Armagh, Northern Ireland is writing original songs with quirky lyrics and melodic tunes that take the audience into the groove. The band formed in 2012 with the idea of creating modern folk inspired music that would have a real swing to it and fit contemporary music structures.
The 5-piece band gets going with Johno Whittington, a competent drummer, setting the harmony and swing of the band with his rhythm driven guitar playing. Maxl Walmsley Pledl with a strong background in Irish Traditional music then puts a bounce into his banjo playing to add that feel good factor. Weston Clendinning uses his physical energetic presence and soulful voice with poetic lyrics to take the listener on a journey of unrequited love and bad dancers among other things. While this all sounds good and the fans love it, there is something missing. So next add a little bass from Nathan Cassidy, and get those people grooving to the beat and finally pull it all together with the sustaining, harmonic syncopated sounds of Leah-Ann Walmsley Pledl on keyboard.
The band have to-date played pubs, hotels and outdoor venues. A recent appearance at the Balmoral Show May 2013 was well received and was previewed on Downtown Radio with a demo broadcast, live appearance and interview. While the sound of the band has been compared to that of Mumford and Sons, Castlestreet draws strongly on the Irish Traditional vibe.
‘Drawing from a wide variety of musical influences, She Speaks blends each members contribution into a whirlpool of passionate and honest song writing. In turn, seducing the audience with their emotionally resonate performance.
Since the coming together of the band in February 2010, She Speaks have played numerous venues around Dublin and Kildare, including; Whelan’s, The Village, The Grand Social, The Phoenix and The Late Lounge, among other events.
The band recorded ‘Park Song’. which appeared on a compilation cd, put together by the culture factory. This launched on 20th August 2011, and featured special guests Luka Bloom and Christy Moore, and ‘Horrified’ for another compilation cd, put together by the Emergenza festival organizers, early 2011. Other recordings include, ‘A night on the town’, which you can find through the bands facebook page.’

Formed in June 2011 to provide music at a sibling’s graduation party, the band practiced hard all summer and landed a residency at a Lisdoonvarna pub during the September Matchmaking festival. Inspired by that experience, Purple Electric have gigged everywhere from local pubs, house parties and fundraisers, to St. Patrick’s Day Festivals and a Battle of the Band Competition at the Stables in UL.
A performance highlight for Purple Electric was playing to a packed house of 500 at Glor Theatre, Ennis in the 2012 Final of Clare’s Got Talent. Lately, Purple Electric spent 6 weeks in the top 10 of the nationwide Red Bull Bedroom Jam Competition and recently featured on Clare FM’s Afternoon Show.
The band includes Cian Doherty on drums, brothers Eoin and Brian Davies on vocals and bass, Laurence Egan on keyboards, Máiread Healy on vocals and James Cotter on lead guitar.

Paul Melia releases his debut album Hold Onto The Colours in 2013. The album title is a direct reference to the colourful world of sound through synesthesia which Paul inhabits.
The album was written, produced, arranged including orchestral arrangements by Paul. Most instruments were played by Paul.Drum duites were handled by Johnny Boyle(The Frames,Picturehouse,Pugwash). It was recorded in various places including Pulse Studios,(Dublin), Paul’s own Studio and the Orchestra was recorded with the Malmo Symphonic Orchestra in Sweden. Artwork duites were by James Marsh.James is most well known for his superb Talk Talk album sleeves. Talk Talk are without a doubt a major influence so it was a special moment for Paul when James came on board for this project..Hold Onto The Colours was mastered by Jon Astley(Tori Amos,Tears For Fears,George Harrison).
New Model Army, have announced the title of their hotly anticipated 12th Studio album. The self-produced set was finished earlier this year in Los Angeles with Joe Barresi mixing, (Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool.) The record marks a major evolution in their sound.
Entitled “Between Dog and Wolf” the album is filled with multi-layered drums and atmospheric musical textures while sacrificing none of the band’s famous passion and song-writing skills. The album is scheduled for release in September.
Says founder, lead Singer and main songwriter Justin Sullivan
“After a series of purist ‘rock-band-in-a-room’ albums over the last eight years, we felt it was time to do something a bit different and sonically this is the best album we’ve ever made. The title comes from a medieval French expression for dusk – when it’s hard to distinguish between dog and wolf, friend or foe. That sense of contradiction represents the band very well and there’s also something of this sense of transformation in the album”.
A feature-film documentary on the history of the band directed by Royal Television Society Award winning Director Matt Reid, which has been over 3 years in the making, is in the final stages of editing for release in September, coinciding with the album.
The album is a testament to the spirit of rebirth that has grown since the fire which destroyed the studio, and the theft of much the band’s remaining equipment in 2011. To celebrate it’s release the band are proud to announce their biggest tour since the 30th anniversary shows.
Says Justin Sullivan: “It’s always good to be back on the road – and the current atmosphere in the band is the most hungry and upbeat that I can remember. We’re really looking forward to this.”

Formed in 2006, Ireland’s Altar Of Plagues have quickly gone on to establish themselves as the new kings of dark music. They allow themselves no stylistic boundaries, but are never anything but bleak. While they clearly arise from black metal sonically, they are as likely to draw on Bjork as they are Burzum, or on Arvo Pärt as they are Emperor. More recently, they have begun incorporating elements from electronic music, grindcore and even Converge’s unique brand of fury to carve a niche that belongs to Altar Of Plagues alone. This individual approach quickly saw them snapped up by Canadian label Profound Lore, where they released their debut album ‘White Tomb’ in 2009, which featured in Decibel Magazine’s Best Of 2009 list. An appearance at the prestigious Roadburn Festival in 2010 – a sign of their ability to reach beyond the traditional black metal audience – and signing to Candlelight Records for the UK and EU. 2011 saw them release their second full-length masterpiece in the shape of ‘Mammal’, an album which Terrorizer Magazine ranked amongst the ten best records of the year. That year also saw them tour extensively across Europe, including a performance to a packed room at Damnation Festival, where evidence that their ferocious, energetic live sets were finding an audience. Now, in 2013, with the release of their third, greatest work ‘Teethed Glory And Injury’, the band have cemented themselves as one of the essential heavy bands of their time.
A debut performance and EP launch from this two piece band featuring Anna Jordan on vocals and piano and Dennis Cassidy on drums and electronics. Support on the night comes from Paddy Groenald.

Well into it’s second year, Whelans Singer songwriter night ‘Song Cycle’ continues to offer a platform for local and non local acts to experiment, sing and share in the friendly informal setting of Whelans front window. Taking our cues from our favourite artists musings on the creative process (Van Dyke Parks lends us the title from his seminal 1967 opus) this night offers artists a fresh new stage to breath life into songs, experiment with ideas or simply just play for the sheer enjoyment of it.
The Format of Song Cycle has developed a little since moving downstairs earlier this year. Regular hosts Ollie Cole and John Byrne help us curate the evening and take part as well by performing some of their works in progress as well as old standards. Needless to say an impromptu session is never too far away if some of their special guests feel like playing a song or two.

LJ met Caleb after he’d travelled across the sea, from the oil fields of Texas where he was spawned, screaming and gurgling into existence/extinction. Terrified she fled to Dublin to learn 326 different ways to excavate eardrums from unsuspecting crowds, and remained for many a year, doing so… Upon her return to the wilds of West Cork, in search of new audiences to terrorize, she beseeched the Grand Wizard to ferment a band for her, out of only the most purely filthy materials. After much smog, Coca-Cola (Curse it’s foul Influence), petrol and lighter fluid, Caleb was again forced upon her for her own good, and, for the sake of familiarity, she looked past the oil to oggle at his mastery of sweet funky rhythms. In an effort to add some Adhesive Slime to hold this shambling cripple of a musical outfit together, the wizard added Young Master Ruprecht to the brew, renowned for his slimey, sticky, gooey yuk.
So with Blood, Bones, and Brains finally sourced, (Thats Bass, Drums, and Songwriting, let loose ,gone mad. Unimpressed Dubious declined, only to later offer his services on banjo, saxophone, Thumb-twiddler and Special effects. Empire Circus are a four piece Alt Pop outfit who have tapped into the panache of Two Door Cinema Club, the demeanour of Arcade Fire and the general cool suave of Gorillaz… then morphed out at the other side with a resonant sound under the guise of Empire Circus.

The lupine refrain of Ollie Cole’s new single, ‘Little Wolf’, lingers errily in the mind long after a listen. Ollie’s first track released since 2010’s debut solo record We Albatri is a thoughtful, slow burning ode – unhurried and measured in its delivery – and an introduction to a new phase for one of the most consistent Irish songwriters of his generation.

Volume 3 of the Talkcha Compilation Series is released this June with the launch tour rolling into Whelan’s at midnight on Friday June 21st. The show will feature performances from Riastradh and :Hounds: and CD copies of the compilation will be available for the depressed economy-proof price of €3. It’s your classic Whelan’s guest list situation, in other words, if leave your name, and number of passes required, on the wall of this event page before 5pm next Friday you can see two of Ireland’s zingiest live acts for absolutely naw-in! Outstanding.
RIASTRADH
Following a lengthy sabbatical of several years Riastradh returned to live venues in Ireland in 2011 playing ‘the hits’ from their, I think it’s fair to say ‘seminal,’ ‘Vanilla Mannequin Demos’ which remains their only official release to date. A new release is creeping towards completion we are told and if the live manifestations are anything to go by we’re in for the same sublime cocktail of thunderous jazz infused bass/drum synergy, schizophrenic angular guitar shlobberin and Bob Kavanagh’s always engaging vocal thrust. The members have played in a list of other acts to lengthy to mention and quite simply do not have the profile their music deserves… judge for yourselves
It’s rapidly becoming something of a tradition to whack on one (or more) of the beefier chugg-filled bangers from :Hounds:’ excellent ‘Spacemad’ (released earlier this year) at Summer time sessions to force the can wielding revelers into gentle head-banging. Talkcha are delighted to welcome them back to the upstairs Whelans stage they’ve so successfully owned many times in the recent past. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with these air-punch-friendly anthems then for the love of Bob do it now!
Tied To Machines, A Banbridge band formed from the remnants of maniacal, repetitive practice and a shared loathing for the classic rock scene they were forced to endure.
As the band have gained more experience their sound has evolved and the band have been likened to such acts as The Bronx, Refused and Nirvana.
Their first E.P garnered positive reviews from unlikely sources including Gig Ape, Hot Press and ihouseu. The relative success of the record has seen the band headline shows across the North and support Punk Rock veterans the UK Subs.
They recently finished work on their second record, again, with Rocky O’Reilly (Oppenheimer) in Start Together Studios, released in August 2012. They featured on the ‘Product of Northern Ireland podcast’ by ATL, played on Radio 1 Introducing, featured on 2fm and have had television plays on BBC Sport.
