The 6 selected acts in DCTVs innovative music series, Community of Independents, will perform in Whelan’s of Wexford Street on Tuesday 6th September.
Dublin Community Television (DCTV) in partnership with First Music Contact (FMC) have been funded by the Broadcasting Authority Of Ireland (BAI) to make a television series exploring Independent Music in Ireland and the different layers that make up this essential and fruitful community. Created and produced by Barry Lennon of Richter Collective this phase of the project is the result of a huge response to the call out for bands to tell their story.
A panel of people involved in the Independent Music Community including Angela Dorgan (FMC) , Michael Roe (Richter Collective) and Niall Byrne (Nialler 9 Blog) selected the six stories from more than 40 applicants that they felt best represented this community . We are glad to announce these acts “Patrick Kelleher and his cold dead hands”, “Axis Of”, “Lafaro”, “Owensie”, “Windings” and “Junior 85”.
Tickets are on sale from today through the WAV box office at Five Euro (Including Booking Fee) and all performances will be featured, along with interviews on the changing music scene and how these acts are adapting and developing their own support structures in DCTVs upcoming series, Community of Independents.
We hope you can make it along to the gig and help this project grow !
Shove are a four-piece Rock Band from Dublin Ireland. Formed in 2008 by Gary Brennan (Vocals, Guitar) and Garrett Hulgraine (Lead Guitar) the dream was to play the music they wanted to play. Fed up with ‘trends’ and ‘marketing’ the lads believed that people wanted to hear music from the soul, hard-hitting and more importantly, real. Hooking up with like minded and experienced individuals Ciaran O’Gorman (Bass) and John Peyton (Drums) Shove embarked on a dedicated writing and moulding period before bringing their vision to the people. The result was the highly acclaimed and extremely well received debut E.P ‘Come in from the Rain’ .
Since then the band have amassed a slew of electric performances on the Dublin Music Scene, commercial radio airplay and incredibly successful showings in high profile band competitions. It’s been a fruitful three years for a band that sees themselves as just getting started!
Now, Shove have just completed recording their brand new E.P ‘Breakdown’ in Salt Studios, Howth under the watchful eye of the legendary Frank Kearns. This now opens up a brand new and incredibly exciting phase for the band who have been compared to such legendary acts such as U2, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters. The promise of a Shove gig? A night to remember, that’s the deal, no compromise….
So here we are again, after a fantastic heftfest we are pleased to announce the second one.
We are putting it on upstairs in Whelans this time and will be running a lot later. This means some great late bands and DJ sets. So the dancing will continue into the night.

“The artist who wore his heart on his sleeve, his record sleeve. He will be hugely missed, I grieve to know that I will only hear that great wounded bear of a voice on his albums from now.” – Bill Davidson
John Martyn’s music is timeless. Beth Orton calls him “The Guvnor” and credits him with being a pioneer of ambient/chill out music. Wounded Bear are a trio of musicians who endeavour to produce the same chill out atmosphere playing some of the finest acoustic songs ever written. Using two acoustic guitars, a double bass and a voice eerily similar to John Martyn’s own Wounded Bear will transport those of you who are already John Martyn fans right back to the first time you heard the songs that made you tingle. To those of you who have yet to have the pleasure of John Martyn’s music, we can only say…we envy you your first time.
Wounded Bear are: John Conneely. Mark Sullivan. Paul Johnson
Martin Sexton plays a Whelan’s show on 11th September 2011 as part of his Sugarcoating European Tour. Rising star Roisin O has been confirmed as special guest.
Fresh off the back of supporting Declan O’Rourke on his recent Irish tour, and carrying the rough mix of their upcoming album The Gandhis set about touring their fresh, new sound on their own.
Finnish Glam Sensation Reckless Love will return to Dublin’s Whelans on Friday 2nd December. This follows their stunning debut show in Crawdaddy last year and will be in support of their forthcoming 2nd album. Doors will be at 7pm & supports will be confirmed soon.
Kuopio, Finland isn’t exactly Hicksville, Indiana and Helsinki sure ain’t no West Hollywood but with Reckless Love the analogies are obvious. This bunch of rockers dropped out of school, moved to Helsinki and chose to scrape by whatever menial jobs available to chase their rock n’ roll dreams. Having scored a recording deal with a major label, Universal Music, as the 2nd glam rock band during the last decade or so, Reckless Love show that, if nothing else, the guys master whatever lessons they’ve ever taken in the subject of hard rock. Reckless Love’s debut album features a plethora of influences audible to the listener, and as knowledgeable as the band seems to be of its musical roots, it’s their own take on hard rock that makes the album so extremely exciting. Sure, hard life can teach you stuff, but in Reckless Love’s case it has taught them to teach people stuff. The lesson here is: there’s not a whole lot crap that cant’ be healed with a good song and a smile. And because the songs are so good, smile you will – after you get a load of this. Reckless Love extends sonic hails to the greats of hard rock ranging from Kiss to Van Halen to W.A.S.P. to Warrant to Poison to Guns N’ Roses and everything in between, with a heartwarming, sunny disposition able to melt the gloomiest of cynics.
The party starts with Beautiful Bomb, One More Time, Love Machine, So Yeah!!, Feel My Heat and Born To Rock. With subject matter dealing dominantly with the over-enhanced sexuality of a young straight male (i.e. women, or the lack thereof), the songs have a boisterous, energetic, fun, freewheeling party attitude, combined with swaggering, outrageous and sometimes, downright silly lyrics. It’s all packed in a top-notch modern, yet adequately retro sound that strongly reflects classic 80’s hair metal heroes. Not reducing to a one trick pony, the album also has it’s darker, rawer, heavy metal side. Aggressive and theatrical Wild Touch, Badass and Romance have a rowdy, rebellious bite to them. Iced with slick choirs, these cuts include heavy guitar rifforama and some of vocalist Olli Herman’s nastiest Vince Neil snarls. This is where the band’s Judas Priest, Ozzy, WASP and Ratt influences shine. The album also contains the super slick ballad Sex, which gives away the fact that under the disguise of hell-raising party animal machismo lie sensitive guys wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Predominantly guitar driven, melodic and beautiful the album also portrays the band’s classy touch to keyboard arrangements. Featuring the whole arsenal: big choirs, clean high vocals and fragile single voice melodies, almost whispering at times, vocally the album is a wonder to behold, and in what might come as a surprise, the band can also display a striking lyrical depth, almost coming down to philosophical level in Back To Paradise.
While maybe dropouts in regular school, there’s not a page in the book of hard rock these guys haven’t taken to heart. In the hair metal school tables turn and Reckless Love are the teachers. And the class will only be dismissed once thoroughly entertained.

Say hello to alt. country’s new shining star, a woman who boasts more than just a twinkle in her eye but in her sweet vibrato and sharp homespun lyrics too.
In her trademark cherry red cowboy boots, Mexican, Irish and Canadian singer songwriter – and sometime painter – Lindi Ortega is currently readying her first official UK release, the captivating ‘Little Red Boots’, out this September.
Inspired by Johnny Cash and Frida Kahlo and sounding like the lovechild of Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton, this Toronto based singer has already opened for Keane in the US and been working as a backing singer for the Killers’ Brandon Flowers and his acclaimed solo project since last summer including a date at Oxegen.
Lindi has also collaborated with Diplo and Switch for their electro dancehall project Major Lazer and their ‘Lazers Never Die’ EP, proving that she is far from your average back porch crooner with a hatful of heartache and a bust-up six string.
With her arresting vocals and delicious songs, she describes her own brand of alt country, as a “roadside motel love affair between old school outlaws and country darlings”.
Lindi’s 12 track album is enough to speak to the desperado in all of us and features an all star cast of talented session musicians, from guitarist Kevin Breit (Norah Jones, Cassandra Wilson), bassist Dave Piltch (KD Lang, Louden Wainwright), drummer Davide Direnzo and keys from Ron Lopata.
‘Little Red Boots’ is produced by Ron Lopata, mixed by Darryl Neurdorf (Neko Case, The Sadies, New Pornos) and mastered by Peter Moore (Cowboy Junkies, Neil Young).

Radiomen first set up in early 2009 and after a series of name changes and different line-ups the band finally settled down and got a couple of gigs in late 2009 before going on hiatus until summer of the 2010 with Sam and Rob being the only remaining original members. After summer of 2010 the band finally got on its feet when Ian and Dan stepped in with fresh beats and a fresh start. The band are currently working on their own material and try to infuse smart lyrics with tight drum beats and pouding bass lines played behind catchy guitar riffs.
