Jam master and musical wizard

ZAMO RIFFMAN

plus support DASHODA RP aka ROBERT POWER ^ Upstairs ^ Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, multi-tasker, actor, vibe guru and weaver of musical magic Zamo Riffman has announced a very special headline show, upstairs at Whelan’s in Wexford Street on Wednesday March 25th. The man born Eamonn Griffin grew up in the Independent Republic of Churchtonia (aka Churchtown) and formed his first band, Get a Mexican Station, with his schoolfriend John Carney in 1985. Nearly 30 years later, Carney wrote and directed the movie Sing Street, based on his and Zamo’s escapades in the band. The character of Eamonn, the kid who could play any instrument, was of course modelled on Zamo. The Riffman also co-wrote the retro 1980s-style songs for the movie, played bass on the soundtrack, and even had a cameo in the film. (You can also catch him in a Tullamore Dew ad, directed by Ridley Scott’s son Jake. Check it out on YouTube.) Zamo is a graduate of Ballyfermot Rock School, and while there he was one of the star pupils chosen to jam with the legendary Rory Gallagher. Since then, he’s jammed with the cream of Irish rock and beyond: he’s played guitar with Lir and The Killers’ Mark Stoermer, bass with Dragonfly and Johnny Pyro, and drums with David Kitt, Mundy, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Mary Stokes. He’s also rocked the party in Madchester tribute band Hacienda That, wedding band extraordinaire Deja Boo and funkadelic collective The Love Tailors. Zamo will be bringing lots of his super-talented friends along to help him at Whelans, including Aisling Browne (Gavin Friday, King Kong Company) on vocals, Dec Quinn (Republic of Loose, Cathy Davey, JJ72, Roisin O) on keyboards, Andy MacDonald (Bronagh Gallager, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Mundy) on bass, Mark Colbert (Damien Dempsey) on drums, and Sam Killeen (Senu) on guitars. Support on the night comes from Dashoda and Rob Power. This is a legendary night in the making – and you don’t want to miss it when the magic happens. ZAMO RIFFMAN – Whelan’s Upstairs, Wexford Street, Wednesday March 25th, 8pm. Tickets €10 at the door or from whelanslive.com
