The Slow Readers Club are a Manchester based four piece who specialise in dark and brooding indie electro. Their music has drawn comparisons with Interpol, The Killers and The National. Since the release of their second album Cavalcade the band have been building an impressive following (selling out Manchester Gorilla, St Philips Church and The Workman’s Club Dublin weeks in advance). But things may be about to go to the next level as the band are now on the brink of going on the road with James at the personal request of Jim Glennie and Saul Davies who have been championing the band in interviews. Cavalcade is an album overflowing at the brim with singles to the point that it feels more like a Greatest Hits album than anything else. The Slow Readers Club don’t deal in half measures and neither do they repeat the same formula over and over again.
They write songs about genuine human feelings, dark moments that everyone encounters at some point in their life, and they emerge triumphant at the other side with music as the catharsis to the weight of the world’s problems. Forever In Your Debt, Start Again, Don’t Mind, I Saw A Ghost and Plant The Seed are a quintet of singles that brought the band a wider audience with each release to the point that they were selling out bigger and bigger venues in their hometown of Manchester and beyond. Those aforementioned shows sold out purely on excited word of mouth and radio play and they’ve played to packed rooms across the country as word of mouth has spread feverishly. Working very much with the DIY ethic by necessity, people have started to sit up and take notice at this underground phenomenon. Chris Hawkins and Steve Lamacq became fans, they became favourites of the This Feeling club night, XFM’s Hattie Pearson picked them up and recorded a simple but stunning acoustic version of I Saw A Ghost in Manchester’s Central Library for her Matter Of Sound video blog and a steady but growing band of influential blogs have picked up the mettle and championed them tirelessly.
The Slow Readers Club’s anthemic electronic sound is perfectly suited to the big halls of the country that they will be visiting on this tour with James. Including dates at such legendary venues as Brixton Academy, Shepherds Bush Empire, Newcastle City Hall, Bristol Colston Hall and Whelan’s in Dublin, Ireland, they will play to thousands of new fans before embarking on recording their third album.
