Once ‘Guy’ Sam Cieri Set for Debut Irish Headline Date Florida born singer songwriter Sam Cieri is set to perform his first Irish headline date Upstairs in Whelan’s on Sunday 7 August. Currently wowing audiences in the lead role of “Guy” in the smash-hit show Once at the Olympia Theatre, for his Whelan’s gig Sam will perform a set comprising of his own material as well as some songs from Once. Picking up the guitar at the age of 13, with the self-confessed aim of impressing girls, Sam soon began writing original songs. Commenting on his upcoming performance at Whelan’s, Sam said: “Coming to Ireland has always been a dream of mine. Once is a love song to Dublin and to be a part of that is an overwhelming and humbling experience. After seeing the film, I was inspired by Glen Hansard to start busking around. Now, just a few years later, to find myself performing the role of ‘Guy’ is a dream come true. The icing on the cake is to perform my own songs in such a fantastic and insanely historic live music venue as Whelan’s.” Deciding in his teens that singing and music was what he should do with his life, one day Sam walked out of high school and never went back. He then spent several years in South Florida and Las Vegas before moving to New York. Sam would write in the day and play and sing in the New York subways at night to pay the bills, and when that failed to cover rent he would sell motorcycles and scooters in Brooklyn. After a nasty motorcycle accident Sam would reach for another way to create and find theatre and in doing so a brand new maze of music came into being. In the stage-show Once, based on the movie sensation of the same name, Sam plays the lead role of “Guy”. The show tells the life-changing love story of “Guy” and “Girl”; two musicians who meet by chance on a Dublin street and create something wonderful together. The show runs until Saturday 27 August at the Olympia Theatre. Full details here https://oncemusical.ie Sam Cieri’s debut Irish gig takes place on Sunday 7 August, Upstairs at Whelan’s (doors 8pm).
