POKEY LaFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE

UBANGI STOMP CLUB presents:

POKEY LaFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE

Following their stompin success on Later with Jools on New Year’s Eve and a sold out UK and Ireland tour, Pokey returns to Dublin for what promises to be yet another musical highlight from the great man. Pokey LaFarge delivers a creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing. It’s wonderfully infectious, and all laid down in front of a big, big swingin’ beat. His sounds are truly original and modern, yet LaFarge’s influences are apparent, as tinges of Blind Boy Fuller, Bob Wills, and Jimmie Rodgers are easily recognizable. From St. Louis, Missouri, Pokey is accompanied by fellow St. Louis musicians The South City Three, Joey Glynn on upright bass, Adam Hoskinson on guitar and Ryan Koenig on harmonica and washboard. “Such is the authentic tone of this ragtime guitar, you’d swear Pokey LaFarge was from a whole other time: the pre-War American South, maybe, hoofing around the fringes of Highway 61, battered suitcase at his elbow…”–Uncut “LaFarge not only remembers the good times- he is the good times…. LaFarge is the performer who’s ahead of the game right now, one potent enough to gain the attention of Jack White, who’s keen to record him. And this album, bless its Jelly Roll heart, should induce further attention as Pokey, singing, guitar-strumming and delivering hot kazoo, revives memories of old New Orleans, stirred in with country blues and a touch of Western swing…” —Mojo “His guitar sounds like a ukulele, his voice like a transgendered punk Bessie Smith, and his style suggests a hobo Pee-wee Herman…–Riverfront Times “..could be the birth of the next Bill Monroe creating such a fine mix of ragtime, jugband, blues, folk and country, he has found his own genre” —Terry Nolan of No Depression
