– Upstairs –

Marie Conniffe is a writer of deeply personal and revealing stories of love, life and beautiful truths. She began as a collector of songs by musicians, such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young and, particularly, Joni Mitchell. However, it wasn’t until she arrived in South Korea in 2004 to live and work, that she began to take her own songwriting seriously. Inspired by the friends she made at the Woodstock open mic, she began to play regularly around Seoul and further afield, and went on to star as the Closing Event of the World Arirang Festival in October 2005. Upon her return to Ireland, themes of loss and heartache began to inform her songwriting, as well as those of magic and redemption. It was at this time that Marie was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, mania essentially. Although she has recovered and continues to stay well, the experience has stayed with her, and provides a window to a deeper understanding of her journey as an artist.
