“[Funeral In My Heart] is a sad, sweet, acoustical rumination on grief, abounding with fantastical images that Landry delivers so gently that they feel perfectly natural.” – Ann Powers, NPR Music

“He’s just as cool and interesting as you’d hope a sometime professional vagrant from Louisiana who always wears a hat, smart boots and knows good whiskey, to be.” – Laura Marling

Gill Landry is a multi-instrumentalist in the truest sense of the word. A member of Old Crow Medicine Show since 2004, he has played guitar, pedal steel, and banjo in addition to being a contributing songwriter in the critically acclaimed Americana string act. Now he has also released his third solo record, a self-titled ten-track piece of contemplation.

After working through some more classic broken-hearted love songs on his first two albums, Landry says, “I tried not to come at this one from the point of how things could or should have been, or should be, but rather searched for sweet understanding and surrender to what is or was, and moving forward with compassion and kindness without harsh judgment to the reasons for this crime or that misstep.”

Many artists contributed to the musicality of this record, from Laura Marling who duets on “Take This Body”, an urgent plea that imagines the desperate love that courses through our impermanence, to trumpeter Nick Etwell of Mumford and Sons, who plays with tasteful power on a handful of songs. From Odessa, who lends harmonies and violin to a number of tunes, including the waltz-time love letter “Emily”, to Robert Ellis whose eloquent and understated guitar work on “Fenario” and “Bad Love” is mellifluous.

This album is one that anyone can relate to and will want to listen to, over and over, with their lovers. Even if those lovers are just in their minds.
