WhelansLive is proud to present a celebration of new Irish music. Every Tuesday will see the upstairs venue play host to a series of the best of new music this country has to offer. Three hand-picked bands showcase their originality, performance and amazingly fresh songwriting skills. It is a great opportunity to see the next round of Ireland’s unsung and unsigned.

____________

EMPATHY

Empathy. This term is generally associated with the identification and understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives. However, it is also the name of a 3-piece alternative rock outfit currently defining itself on the Irish music circuit. Citing bands such as Placebo and Interpol as their influences, Empathy’s ability to blend delicate and distorted guitar tones, disciplined bass lines and complimentary drum patterns with a vocal style reminiscent of Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen) is what influenced Unsigned & Independent Magazine to brand them “kitchen sink music for the new generation.”

Empathy can be found regularly, but not exclusively, playing venues around Dublin City Centre. Last month, the band performed in The Grand Social, The Pint, The Slaughtered Lamb (Swords), and Fibbers Rock Bar, from which they secured their position on the (Fibbers) line-up for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Recently, they have been preparing for the festival season, and have already been confirmed to return to the Ballinamore Free Fringe Festival 2013 on August 22nd.

The band’s concept was formed in 2007 when lead singer/guitarist Dean Nolan and drummer Adam McCarthy paired up, having previously performed together on another project. The search began for the band’s unique sound they now possess, and it would take over two years before bassist Stephen Callan completed the line-up. In 2012, the group enjoyed various successful performances and coverage, including an acoustic set at Hilfiger Music Days featured in Hot Press Magazine, reaching the semi-finals of the Courtyard Hotel Battle of the Bands, an appearance on Radio Nova’s “Locals Only” show with Carol Dooley, and performing at the Ballinamore Free Fringe Festival. Most recently, Empathy placed first in the “Loudness War Battle of the Bands” in January 2013.

Despite their busy schedule, Empathy are currently writing new material for their debut EP that is to be released later this year. No additional information on the EP is available at this time, but the group admits they are looking forward to the project! Furthermore, the band is in the process of securing more festival dates for this coming season. You can keep up to date with Empathy’s activities on their Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as listening to available music on their Soundcloud page (all links below).
