A singer songwriter from York, Benjamin Francis Leftwich taught himself to play guitar at the age of 10 before going on to front indie-pop outfit ‘The Nicoles’ in his teens. His influences range from Arcade Fire to Nina Simone to Elliott Smith and have aided him in moulding his own brand of pensive folk-pop, allowing for comparisons to artists such as Iron & Wine, Damien Rice, José Gozález and Bon Iver.
His first solo EP A Million Miles Out led to impressive support slots with I Am Kloot, Fionn Regan and Lisa Mitchell. Mainstream attention then began to gather with his cover of Arcade Fire’s ‘Rebellion’ on Dermot O’Leary’s BBC R2 Saturday Sessions show. In 2011 ‘Pictures’ his first ever single from his second EP of the same title was named “The Hottest Record in the World Today” by BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. In July 2011 he went on to release his debut album Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm, named “a majestic debut” by The Fly. The record was produced by Ian Grimble whose discography includes The Manic Street Preachers and Rhodes. In 2014 Album track ‘Shine’ was named Spotify’s most addictive track of the year. Last year Leftwich co-wrote the beautiful ‘Grow’ with British artist Frances and the track featured in the Amazon UK TV advertisement.
Having spent the last year writing and recording a new album, Leftwich now promises fans from his very own Facebook account that the album is finally finished. Going on this young York man’s musical output so far, this his second album is sure to deliver.
