AILIE BLUNNIE

plus guests

Leitrim-born singer, songwriter, piano-player, and Glastonbury-longlisted newcomer, Ailie Blunnie, brings her novel brand of fresh, fanciful and sometimes frankly devastating pop and folk tunes to Whelan’s for the first time. Accompanied by a band of hand-picked musicians, this performance promises to touch your heart and send you home with a smile on the dial. It also coincides with a World Cup rest day – perfect!

///////////

Ailie Blunnie is a piano-based songwriter and performer from Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Her self-penned material fuses elements of pop and folk with those reflecting her classical background. She graduated with a degree (Music, French) and a masters from NUI Maynooth, and it was during these years that she began to write songs.

Over the next few years, she honed her craft, playing support to artists including Paddy Casey, John Spillane, Juliet Turner and The 4 of Us, and writing commissioned works for theatre, short film, educational resources and commemorative events. She moved to Dublin in 2011 and road-tested her songs on the city’s vibrant open mic scene before headlining performances in some of the capital’s most intimate venues, including Bewleys Cafe Theatre, The Odessa Club, The Mercantile Venue and The Grand Social.

In 2012, she returned to college to study psychology. The decision to record her début EP, “On love.. and other murder mysteries”, came in January 2013 when she had just finished a whole load of exams and remembered there was more to life! “On love.. and other murder mysteries” was released on Happy Out Records on 30 August 2013. The third track, “How much do you love me?”, was a finalist in the UK International Songwriting Competition 2013 in the Love Song category, and in March 2014, Ailie was voted onto the long list of 120 acts for a chance to play at Glastonbury 2014 as part of its Emerging Talent Competition.

“So new, so fresh, and so good” (Carl Corcoran, The Blue of the Night, RTÉ Lyric fm)

“Carrick-on-Shannon-born singer, songwriter, pianist and former would-be gymnastics champ busts a move with a likable, neat line in quirky pop and folk tunes. Her debut EP “On love.. and other murder mysteries” has several reasons to be gleeful, particularly “Coming To Get Ya” and “Charlie’s Lullaby”.” (Jim Carroll, The Ticket, The Irish Times)

“Ailie Blunnie is a superb performer, singer and songwriter […] with a funny quirky personality that oozes charm and demands your attention.”(Peter Nagle, blogger, 2 U I Bestow)
