CATHAL COUGHLAN & the Grand Necropolitan Quintet
+ guests - THREAD PULLS “He is always a presence and what he did/does is heroic.” Robert Forster, The Go-Betweens “Hyper-articulate, glumly didactic and musically ornate...” The Irish Times “Coughlan has been quietly making the best music of his life. His sardonic croon has grown deeper and riche, his music more acoustic, his lyrics accumulating into a canon of baleful wit which stands comparison with Leonard Cohen. - Uncut Magazine Cathal Coughlan is an Irish singer and songwriter who has been based in the UK for over two decades. He releases his fifth and latest album, Rancho Tetrahedron, on Kitchenware on August 9th. He was also a member of the groups Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions, with each of which he recorded several albums and toured internationally. The new album was recorded in various locations in London, California and Ireland, and contains 12 new songs. The album was recorded by various people, including Oliver Knights of Turin Brakes (who also sang), Andy Ramsay of Stereolab and Coughlan himself. Mixing, fittingly, ended in The Black Heart Procession's studio, adjoining the freight airport in San Diego, Xmas '09. It was freezing cold and, periodically, booming sound-systems would circle the empty parking lot outside. A giant East German flag decorated the wall.

Thread Pulls became the first Irish band to be invited to play at the celebrated All Tomorrow's Parties festival at the behest of Vincent Gallo. After releasing four EPs on 9-pt records as a three piece, they stripped down to the duo of Gavin Duffy and Peter Maybury, and spent the following two years developing their upbeat progressive sound which meshes trumpet, electronics and treated vocals with a no-wave inspired mix of repetitive bass and drums. Their debut album is recorded and due for release on Osaka Recordings (Patrick Kelleher, Hulk) in September of this year. http://www.myspace.com/threadpulls
