ConcernWorldwide, Ireland's largesthumanitarian agency, which has beenworking in Haiti since 1994, have launchedan emergency appeal for anestimated €5 million to deal with the consequences ofthe biggestearthquake in the country in over two centuries.

The appeal is seeking emergency funding fordesperately needed food, water, shelter and medicine.

Theearthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday 12thJanuary has affected 3million people (one third of population of Haiti). It isfeared that upto 200,000 people could be dead and many injured. In theepicentre ofthe quake, 80-90% of buildings are damaged, while in other areas40-60%are damaged. Much of the infrastructure is in ruins includingParliament,Ministries, Hospitals, Schools, Roads, etc. According toour staff on theground, we estimate that 1-2 million people willrequire shelter and Non FoodItems – these could include shelter, blankets, cooking utensils, soap and otherhygiene materials, waterpurification kits, etc.

Concern Worldwide has been working inHaitisince 1994 focusing on improving the health of those in need, preventingviolence in the slums and fighting HIV and AIDS. There arejust over 100 staffworking in-country and unfortunately, it was withgreat sadness that we learntof the death of one of Concern's nationalstaff members and another formeremployee. Not all Concern staff haveso far been accounted for. To assist in theearthquake response,Concern has immediately sent a number of supplementarystaff withexpertise in logistics, health, nutrition, water and sanitation, andengineering.

So far, Concern has carried outdistributions ofcritical medical supplies, plumpy nut (a high calorie food usedtotreat malnutrition) and water to the State University Hospital.Distributionsof pick axes (to clear rubble), surgical gloves, disinfectant, waterpurification tablets, water and first aid supplieshave also been made tocommunity leaders in two of the areas in whichConcern already works.
